Job
Design Exercise
Using
your current job (or if you are not working at this time, your last
job), reflect on what the job might be like if you were able to re-design
the work to make the job more satisfying, fulfilling, productive,
etc.
First, describe
your job briefly: the main tasks, the scope of your responsibilities,
and the degree of satisfaction that the job provides.
Next, using the
job design strategies discussed in the Coordinator chapter (166-176),
provide specific examples of how to apply job enlargement, job rotation,
and job enrichment strategies to your job. What would you recommend
to transform the job? Why? What might the outcome be if your ideas
were implemented?
To assist you with
this exercise, here's a form that you can download and use for
this exercise. We will discuss these in class. In all likelihood, we will
break into small groups to review outreach proposals and select the
best of these to report back to the full class. I will collect your
proposed innovations after class.
