Introduction to algebraic topology at the graduate level. We will start with the basics of homotopy theory, including coverings, the fundamental group, then spend the bulk of the semester on homology and an introduction to cohomology. The text will be Allen Hatcher's topology ebook.

There will be

HOMEWORK

assigned after each class. I will not grade the homework but we will discuss the problems in class. I will also give seven (7) bi-weekly home assignments that I will call "tests". I think the best schedule would be: assignment given every other Wednesday, due the following Wednesday. They will be graded.

The course letter grades will be based on assignment scores weighted according to the following scheme:

    seven assignments:         7% (14% each)
    bonus credit:         2%

In order to help with your planning, here are the days when this class is suspended by the university due to various holidays: (1) Monday through Friday, March 16-20; (2) Monday, April 6. The last day of class in Wednesday, May 6.

The following information is added to satisfy the Minimum Contents of a Class Syllabus requirements. The prerequisites for this course is point set topology as learned in AMAT 540A and some knowledge of group theory at the level of AMAT 327 here at UAlbany. The course is A-E graded. Attendance is critical to success in the class.
