UAlbany Offers China Semester

By Greta Petry (September 3, 2007)

The University at Albany campus embraces the Far East this fall during Gateways to China, a celebration of China's past and present cultures.

The semester kicks off Sept. 5 with opening ceremonies and a visit by the Hon. Ambassador Liu Biwei, consulate-general in New York City.

One of the semester's goals is to increase the number of UAlbany students learning Chinese and studying abroad in China. Toward that end, Chinese language courses will be offered, as well as a Study Abroad Fair featuring China on Oct. 1.

Among the many talks hosted by the OASIS program is The Beijing Olympic Games of 2008: Rhetoric and Reality, with Christopher J. Smith, at Alumni House at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15. Professor James Hargett will examine myths and stereotypes about China and Chinese people Friday, Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. at Alumni House, in China through American Eyes: Fact or Fantasy?

For UAlbany employees and GSEU members, the Employee Assistance program is offering Tai Chi/Qi Gong lessons starting Sept. 10 during lunchtime.

For more information and a complete list of the myriad activities related to China offered at UAlbany, go to www.albany.edu/chats/china or call (518) 442-4082.

The China Semester is sponsored by the Center for the Humanities, Arts and TechnoSciences (CHATS), the China Center, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of International Education, the Office of the Provost, and the Urban China Research Network.
