Alpha Phi Omega
Fall 2003
Upsilon Pledge Class
Introduction:
Let me be one of the first people to congratulate you
on your choice to become a pledging member of our fraternity. This document is to present to you,
everything that will be required of you during your pledging process. If you have any questions about this
document, pledging, or our fraternity in general, please do not hesitate to ask
me. If you are reading this, I have
probably introduced myself to you already.
My name is Brian Sullivan, Pledge Educator for the Fall 2003 semester,
and your future brother.
Continuing the Formalities:
There is no hazing in Alpha Phi Omega. Never will you be asked to do something you
are not comfortable with doing or asked to do personal service towards any of
the members. If you are made to feel
uncomfortable in any way or feel that you have been hazed, it is your
obligation as a pledge to inform someone you trust. (Me, your big brother, or
any brother you are comfortable with).
If at any time you feel that Alpha Phi Omega is not
right for you, you may de-pledge by turning in your pledge pin and binder to
me. Our bylaws require that you wait
until the next semester to repledge, so I encourage you to think about it
before you decide to drop.
Ok, now the Interesting Stuff:
General Pledge Stuff:
Big Brother:
All pledges will be/have been assigned a big brother to guide you
through pledgeing. It is the
responsibility of the big brother to be there for you to answer questions or assist
you with pledge quizzes. If we did our
job right, you will have a lot in common with this person, and they should
prove to be a huge asset to you throughout pledging.
Dues: Every Pledge
of Alpha Phi Omega is required to pay $60 dues to the national office. This money goes towards processing your
paperwork, and issueing you your pledge books, pledge pins, brotherhood pin and
certificate. To pay or set up a payment
plan, you should see the Treasurer, Sam Sly.
Officers: The pledge
class will be nominating and electing a few pledges to serve as officers within
the pledge class. These officers will
help the class plan their projects, and run the pledge class meetings after I
am done. These officers will also be
reporting to the brotherhood at brotherhood meetings.
The class will have the following positions: President, Service chair, Fellowship chair,
Leadership Chair, Secretary and Historian.
Individual Pledge Requirements:
1.Attend all Pledge Meetings*
2.Attend all Brotherhood Meetings*
3.Attend the Frost Valley retreat.
4.Obtain a minimum of 20 Service hours
from at least 3 different projects.
5.Meet with your Big Brother a minimum
of 6 times.
6.Attend at least 2 committee
meetings. (recognized meetings are: service, fellowship, fundraising, banquet,
and bid. The different types of meetings
will be discussed)
7.Have and record an organized
interview with all your fellow pledges, active brothers, and at least 3
'others' (these include advisors, brothers from other chapters, and inactive brothers)
8.Meet with the Pledge Educator after
the second week of pledging ends.
9.Organize and impliment a project
with your big brother, this can be fellowship, service or fundrasing.
10.Pass all quizzes with a grade of 75%
or above.
*if you need to miss a meeting, you must meet
individually with me to make it up.
I know this seems like a lot, but you have a lot of
time to complete these, and we are all here to help.
Pledge Class Requirements:
1.As a class, organize and Impliment a
Service event.
2.As a class, organize and Impliment a
Fellowship event.
3.As a class, organize and Impliment a
Leadership event.
All events must be approved by the pledge educator (me
;-) )
The pledge class must have more then half of the
pledges in attendance at each event in order for it to count.
I also recommend from past experience that you space
these events out. Set your own due date
for the service and fellowship events and get them done by that date. The leadership project will be due
immediately following your pledge final.
