Snow Melt Estimation

Alexia Iasonos & Igor Zurbenko

The goal of this project is to determine the time and quantity of snow melt at an area where daily temperature, rainfall and snowfall data are available. It is assumed that an array of X consecutive days with temperature above zero degrees Celcius is needed for the snow to melf. Therefore, the point t where the temperature crosses zero degrees and remains positive has to be found. KZ filtering is used to isolate the temperature fluctuations and retains the components with lower frequencies (trend). Using this technique the point t and the number of X days is estimated.
