An Alpha man is a well-rounded individual who seeks to carry out the aims of the Fraternity. There is no better way to "live" the aims of the Fraternity than to take an active part in one's immediate community of the affairs of the particular locality in which one lives, be these affairs civic, religious, educational, or political.

From time to time, the National or Regional organizations may request that chapters conduct or support certain programs. Other than these few requests, the chapters are left entirely on their own to formulate and implement activities and projects of their own choosing. Some projects are usually launched in connection with another group or groups, or by the chapter alone. Chapters often combine efforts in order to put across a project for the community that would be both helpful and meaningful. Other projects vary from chapter to chapter and from location to location. Some of the more common projects which have been carried on by practically all chapters in Alpha Phi Alpha are:

1. Help the needy projects
2. Christmas, Thanksgiving, and/or Easter Basket project
3. Scholarships to high school and college students
4. Leadership Development Institute
5. Support to the United Negro College Fund
6. Mother's Day Program
7. Talent/Boy Scout Project
8. Project Alpha
9. Go To High School, Go To College
10. Festival of the Arts
11. Voter Registration (A Voteless People, Is A Hopeless People)
12. Outreach Program or Big Brother Counseling System.
13. Mentorship Program (SANKOFA Project / Alpha Academy / Alpha Head Start Project)

The above programs and projects are only a few of the many which local chapters of the Fraternity execute during the year. In addition to the above programs, Alpha Phi Alpha men are active participants in community projects on a larger scale. Alpha men are leaders in their respective communities and play no small part in community organization and development. Projects such as are enumerated above are most essential if the Fraternity is to continue enjoying the unchallenged position which it enjoys today.
