04/30/03 Albany 7 - Siena College 27 -
04/26/03 Albany 29 - Castleton State 3
By ASP Staff Writer Nicole Russo, Albany, NY -
The ARFC had a long week with a home game on Saturday versus Castlton State College from Vermont and a game on Wednesday against rivals
Siena College. The victory over Castlton was overshadowed by a loss on Wednesday, but the Great Danes walked away from "The Bog"
with one thing in mind: revenge.
Despite the rain that poured down Saturday, the ARFC Parent's Day brought a large crowd that filled the bleachers beneath the tents that were
erected by the players prior to the game. The largest turnout of players was seen that Saturday with thirty-five ruggers lacing up their boots
to pla against the meager 15-man bundle of Castleton players. But though the team was small in numbers, every man on the field in a green Castlton
jersey was large and burly and ready to play rugby.
The kickoff went to Albany quickly led to a drive into Castleton territory, which was soon pushed back to midfield. Castleton showed the Great
Danes how thery played defense, and kicked the ball downfield more than once to gain some breathing room between them and their own try zone.
A kcik was sent high into the air and inot the field hockey field, disrupting both games in the process. Midfield after another failed drive into Castleton territory, Mike "Spud"
Murphy fournd his way downfield and tourched down to give Albany the first points of the game. After the kick back to Albany, the Great Danes drove hard
and fast back into Castleton terrritory and with the ruck on the goal line, Bryce "G-Spot" Wilinsky fought his way into the try zone and brought the
Great Danes lead to ten.
The Dane's Justin Rizzo fought his way through the Castleton line and found the try zone, giving Albany a fifteen to nothing lead. Albany prop Dan "M-Slender" Fontanilla finished
the first half scoring with a try converted by Brian Smith.
To start the second half, the kick off was to the Castlton team who were stopped in their own territory by the Great Danes line. As Castleton slowly began to drive forward, they
were turned back almost to their own try zone when a long kick sent the ball and the Albany backs
racing down the field. Ed Onkaspol touched the ball down which was once again converted by Smith. A kicking duel followed this latest Albany score and both teams were scurrying up and down the field as both teams booted the ball often.
For the first time , Castleton found itself at the Albany try line but the Great Dane defense kipt the Castleton team from entering the try zone. Castlton settled
for a three -point kick and received the ball at the next kick off. But it was far too little far too late. The final whistle was blown to end the game a minute later and the Great Danes
had their second win of the spring, looking much like the ARFC of the Fall Season with a score of Albany 29, Castlton State College 3.
It was a very different stroy for the Great Danes the following Wednesday when they traveled to face their rivals, Siena College.
The first half was a shut out, with the Saints running all over the Great Danes and scoring twenty-four points. Half time was a dismal scene on the Albany side-lines with Coach
John Durant silent for many minutes. He let loose on his team and challanged them, " You look me in the eye at the end of this next half and tell me you gave 110%. The points will tell the tale."
With that he left his team to Captain Sean "Top Gun" Cummings who led his team to the field to face their rivals.
It did not take long for the Great Danes to remember that they were the Empire East Champions. A slow but steady drive into Siena territory found the Great Danes in scoring position. Marty"Sandman" Telfer
fought his way forward and was mere inches from the try zone when he was brought down. But the ball was picked up by Ryan "Cooter" Laskey who touched down to give the Great Danes five points, and robbed Siena of their
shut out. the conversion kick was good and the score was now seven to twenty four. When the final whistle blew, the score was Siena 29, Albany 7 - the Great Danes had suffered a defeat at the hands of their bitterest rivals.
But the Great Danes did not walk away from the game with their heads hanging. They walked off the field and looked their coach in the eye. And soon, revenge was to be at hand, once the Fall League Season began. It was the same
promise made to Albany Law two weeks ago, and the ARFC made good on their word, defeating the Law team at Lincoln Park last week. "You have all summer," Coach John Durant said to his team after the game, "Every day I want you to think about them, because they
are our first game come the fall."
The Empire East Division II Undefeated Champions suffered a difficult Spring Season. The ARFC had only two wins, but walked away with lessons learned- and promises kept. Next season looks to be a very promising one.

The Danes dropped a tough one in the mud to Albany Law last Saturday as part of
the Watkins Tournament. The Danes put up the B side vs Albany Law Alumni and
lost another close battle 10-7. It was all chicken wings and refreshment their
on out.
03/29/03 Albany 3 - Columbia U 7
By ASP Staff Writer Nicole Russo, Bronx, NY -
Two losses, but brilliant performances for ARFC
In the UAlbany men's rugby team's B-side game against Fordham this week, The Great Danes put out a great showing. After a
quick drive downfield Tom Sullivan found the try zone putting the Danes five points up on Fordham. Brian Smith sit up for the extra two points, but the
kick went wide, leaving UAlbany with five points. Fordham replied with a fast try of their own. the extra point was no good, and the game was now tied.
The rest of the twenty-minute half passed uneventfully as fa as points were concerned. The battles for possession took place mid-field with neither team able to get back to the try zone.
After half time, the pace of the first half carried into the second with hard rucks and strong defense.
The Danes dominated in the scrum downs and tackles, keeping control of the ball and keeping Fordham from again finding the try zone. A hard drive
brought Fordham into UAlbany territory, and they set for a three-point kick. The Danes now trailed 8-5. Time was running low and UAlbany needed
to score a try to come back and win the game. The teams made their way up and down the field, both threatining to score more
than one. A long, hard drive down the field from UAlbany territory to Fordham's 5 meter-line was not enough to get the Danes into the try zone before time ran out. The final score
was Albany RFC B-side 5, Fordham University's B-side 8.
In the A-side game against Columbia, the Danes put out for another amazing
game. The UAlbany forwards dominated the scrum downs, pushing Columbia
back or wheeling them arond, gaining possession of the ball nearly every time.
The game was a slow one, riddled with penalties and almost constant whistle blowing from the referee.
Ultimately, the victory went to Columbia, but the Danes played even better than
they did against Long Island last week.
The UAlbany defense was tenacious right from the first kick off. Any blue jersey with the ball was swarmed by a rush of purple
and gold before he got five meters down field. The game immediately proved to be a harsh one for both teams, and not ten minutes
into the half, the referee had blown his whistle more than once. The penalty-ridden game resulted in yet another see saw game with both
teams taking turns marching down field into scoring position. A penalty inside the UAlbany 5-meter line
almost meant a try for Columbia, but the purple brick wall that is the Great Danes defense kept the game scoreless. Kicker Brian Smith booted the ball
from inside his own try zone and sent Columbia scrambling to their 5-meter line to gain possesion. The ensuing battles in Columbia territory
saw the Great Danes find their way into the try zone, but were unable to touch the ball down for five points and the lead. The Danes stayed in Columbia
territory but soon found themselves being driven slowly back to midfield. A break-away almost resulted
in a try for Columbia, but the UAlbany defense kept the game scoreless.
A fast break brought the game back to Columbia territory, but hard defensive drives pushed the Great Danes back to midfield and then inside their own 5-meter line. Another long kick
sent the ball back to the midfield and put the Grat Danes into scoring position. Brian Smith kicked for three points and scored the first points of the game. UAlbany
was now up by three points and both teams found themselves scrambling up and down the field as both used their kicking games
aseffective defense. The game started to turn dirty as the half wound down and more than one scuffle began on the field. A breakaway by Columbia threatened
UAlbany's lead, and as the small back tore downfield, full-back Erik "Gretal" Galaway managed to tackle
the would-be scorer about ten meters short of the try zone. A hard kick sent the game back into Columbia territory and the Great Danes continued to dominate
Columbia in the very frequent scrum downs. Two more times the Great Danes fround themselves inside the Columbia try-zone but had
the touchdowns overturned by the referee. The Great Danes soon found themselves in a position to kick for points twice before the half ended,
but both kicks went wide, leaving the score 3-0 at the end of the longest half ever.
The second half began with both teams battling at mid-field. the amount of penalties increased as the half began to wear on and the game slowed down
considerably. Deep in UAlbany territory Columbia found the try zone for the first time. The two extra point kick was good and the Great Danes now found themselves down by four
points. The game continued to be a back and forth battle to get into the try zone. What looked like it should have been a high-scoring game seemed to crawl as both teams
could not manage to score again. To slow things down more, Columbia had to stop the game twice as one player had muxcle cramps, one had to be taken off the field on a stretcher,
and one left the game with a dislocated shoulder. The Great Danes were looking like Bill Parcell's 1986 New York Giants this half: literaly beating the Columbia team into the
ground. The score did not reflect this performance, but those Ivy League ruggers didn't once forget that they were playing a championship rugby team.
More up-field-midfield-downfield- and-back-again running went on as the second half crawled toward its end. The pace of the game tried to pick itself up, but was hampered by a whistle-happy
referee whose calls were consistently against the Great Danes. "Whos's paying the ref?!" was heard more than once from the UAlbany sidelines (from players and spectators alike)
as the penalties bbecame more frequent and in Columbia's favor. In the final minutes of the game Justin "Uncle
Bob" Rizzo made a long . fast run inside Columbia's 5-meter line and it looked like UAlbany would come from behind and win despite the slow pace and a seemingly biased judge. But the
penalties mounted against the Great Danes again and they found themselves pushed back out of scoring position. When the final whistle blew, a hard fought game that was ARFC's second loss of the spring ended.
The final score was Columbia 7, the Great Danes 3. The point totals showed a loss, but a Coach John Durant said, "We outplayed them all game. The breaks just didn't go our way."
Another disappointment hit the ARFC this, as the much-anticipated annual Capitaland Classic hac to be cancelled this year due to logistical problems. Instead, UAlbany is playing nearby Siena College.
Concerning the cancellation of the Capitaland Classic, second row Marty "Sandman" Telfer commented, "The only consolation we have is that we get to kick the crap out of Siena." The Great Danes and the Saints
are long time rivals and have face each other in the finals of many tournaments and playoff games. Next Saturday, April 12, the Great Danes travel west to play the Syracuse Chargers.
03/22/03 Albany 13 - Long Island RFC 19
Hicksville, NY -
Hicksville, N.Y., The Danes drop close one to the Long Island Rugby Club 19-13 on the island. Albany's bruising forward play and tough defense
set the tone for the day. The Dane's Sr.loose head prop Ed Onkanspol started off the scoring with a
truck and trail off a ruck 10 metres from the LIRFC try line. Fly half Brian Smith's conversion sailed wide. Albany's
other prop Dan Fontanilla took a burst off Captain Sean Cummings quick penalty tap and plowed over three
would be tacklers to give the Dane's a 10-0 lead. Brian Smith would later add a penalty kick shortly after
a Long Island try.
Long Island pressed hard after being down to a college side 13 - 5 at the half. They scored quick off the opening kick off.
Albany then tightend the defense for the rest of the half. When Hooker Chris "Vinny" Harknish came off for injury the game changed.
Albany was unsuccesful in it lineout throw failing to win it's next 7 lines. LIRFC capitalized on one steal to seal the lead on a long
several pass movement highlited with their #10 scoring under the post for a
converted try. Albany pressed in LIRFC's zone for the remaining 5 mins but failed to punch one in. Electing to quick tap 4 penalties
being down 6 rather than go for goal.
Albany Notes: Albany will be traveling by coach to Columbia University this Saturday for a 1PM kickoff at Van Cortland Park.
This will be UAlbany Rugby Alumni's first ever "Purple and Black Tailgate Party". We invite all to attend.
