Continuing Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts Aided by MSW Students

Nine School of Social Welfare MSW students took part in the School’s 7th Annual Service Learning Trip to New Orleans in January 2013. The students assisted with continued relief efforts while also learning about what has been done to improve conditions since Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the city in 2005.

With the help of SSW Associate Professor Loretta Pyles, students undertook a number of initiatives. They met with a distinguished leader, Dr. Lance Hill of the Southern Institute for Education and Research at Tulane University; volunteered at agencies, including the New Orleans City Mission; attended a policy meeting at the City of New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness; and helped to build a home in one of the most devastated wards.
