Applications for the fall 2007 freshman class were at an all-time high, totaling 20,249, an increase of over eight percent from the previous year. Out-of-state and international applications were up 17 and 6 percent respectively, while applications from students of color were up 11 percent. Transfer student applicants increased five percent.

The record number of freshman applicants resulted in an admissions rate of 51.5 percent, down from the 55.8 percent rate in 2006. The entering freshman class numbered more than 2,500, including 177 enrolled in The Honors College. Students of color constitute 24 percent of the class. The mean grade point average of entering freshmen is 89.6 and the mean SAT/ACT score is 1148.

In fall 2006, the University's undergraduate population numbered 12,457, of which 15.7 percent were students of color, 5.4 percent were from out-of-state and 1.9 percent were international students. The most popular undergraduate majors were business, psychology, English, sociology and biology.


Major Highlights

David Cook, a sophomore majoring in atmospheric science, received the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hollings Scholarship Award in Atmospheric Science. He also finished first among all student weather forecasters in the WxChallenge, a nationwide weather-forecasting competition.

Three undergraduate teams competed at the American Collegiate Moot Court Association's (AMCA) national tournament. Alison Bain-Lucey and Patrick Chamberlain were named AMCA moot court All-Americans.

More than 700 students gained real-world experience by participating in the broad range of internship opportunities available in the Capital Region.

To support the fight against cancer, UAlbany students raised $96,164 for the UAlbany Relay For Life, tripling the amount raised in the first event, which took place in 2005.

Students raised $25,000 to help build a new Capital District Habitat for Humanity home in Albany.

Countless UAlbany students contributed thousands of hours of volunteer service across the Capital Region community and beyond. Their efforts ranged from tutoring Albany High School students to rebuilding efforts in New Orleans.

Nearly 370 students studied abroad in the 2006-07 academic year. Destinations included South America, Australia, Canada, China, the Middle East, Europe, Russia, and Africa.

Thirty-four undergraduates received UAlbany grants for research projects they conducted in collaboration with faculty.
