UAlbany University Libraries are ranked in the top 100 academic research libraries in North America, with more than 2.1 million volumes and an extensive collection of public documents and archival materials. The three campus libraries offer a diversity of thought and perspective that enriches education for University at Albany students and visiting scholars from the community and around the world.

Major Highlights

UAlbany Libraries were ranked among the top ten lenders of library materials to other libraries in New York State.

The University Libraries and the Association of Research Libraries held four highly rated management skills institutes, bringing together nearly 150 academic librarians from colleges and university libraries across the U.S. and Canada.

The University Libraries hosted a special lecture by Duane Webster, executive director of the Association of Research Libraries, who discussed "The Future of Research Libraries."

Awards and Recognition

Karen Brown, preservation, received the UAlbany Excellence in Librarianship Award and Candace Merbler, reference, the UAlbany Excellence in Professional Service Award for 2008. Both were named SUNY Chancellor's Award recipients.

Gifts

Several significant gifts from alumni and library supporters, totaling more than $200,000, enabled the Libraries to establish new book endowments for education, humanities and the social sciences, as well as for conservation of library materials.

The estate of Henry Kratz '42 established an endowment for materials published in "High German." Kratz was a professor of German at several schools in the South and Midwest.

The Class of 1957 pledged $50,000 to the Libraries on the occasion of their 50th graduation anniversary.

A gift from Hedy Bagatelle '60, on behalf of her and her late husband Warren, funded the creation of a new study area in the University Library, scheduled to open for student use in fall 2008.
