Albany-area education, business, community and government leaders released the 2014 Albany Promise Report Card, an overview of student achievement through the University-supported Albany Promise partnership. The report assessed the first-ever district-wide review of incoming kindergartners, professional development efforts for early childhood and after-school providers, and increased PSAT and SAT participation.
Hollywood Luminary Looks Back
Prolific motion picture and television writer/executive producer Marc Guggenheim ’92 (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, video game Call of Duty 3, TV's "Arrow") was feted at the 2014 Reaching Higher, Achieving More luncheon. He told a packed audience that at UAlbany he discovered that “the music of language…opened up his whole world.” The annual event features diverse UAlbany graduates who provide students a window into the world of successful alumni.
Field Hockey Super Star
Sophomore Paula Heuser became the first Great Dane in any sport to earn the Honda Sport Award, earning her the honor of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s Player of the Year. A two-time NFHCA All-American mid-fielder, Heuser led the field hockey team to the first-ever semifinal game appearance by a UAlbany team in an NCAA tournament.

Supporting Sexual Violence Victims
As part of its commitment to providing a campus environment free of sexual violence, UAlbany's Greek organizations hosted the “We Care” project with Albany Medical Center. UAlbany’s Title IX coordinator and its Advocacy Center for Sexual Violence, along with students and community volunteers, packed and delivered "survival kits" to victims who’ve undergone forensic testing in the aftermath of sexual assault.

The New Fountain
The long-awaited rehabilitation of the main fountain and 248-foot-tall water tower/carillon was unveiled, creating a spectacular four-season location at the heart of the main campus. The project added trees, gardens and landscaping, LED lighting at the fountain’s base, and a more interactive center walkway and seating — a unique location for development, alumni and student events.
Thank a Donor
In May, a “Thank a Donor” celebration was held to recognize the generosity of those who have contributed to enhancing the student experiences of our Great Danes. More than 1,000 students, including many scholarship recipients, signed a large “thank you” banner and displayed hundreds of individual messages of gratitude.

UAlbany atmospheric and environmental experts are leading development efforts for the NYS Mesonet, a $23.6 million state-of-the-art early warning weather detection network. The initiative is designed to support better planning for extreme and dangerous weather events via 125 stations across New York; they will report and capture high resolution real-time and spatial data every 15 minutes.
UAlbany juniors Luke Evans and Mark Iskandar combined a passion for good health with entrepreneurial spirit to launch a ready-to-drink tea called ChugaChaga. Chaga, a fungus that grows off birch trees, is considered a medicinal mushroom in Eastern Europe folk medicine with potent immune-enhancing properties. Evans is CEO/CFO and Iskandar president of the new company.
Laverne Cox Visits UAlbany
Laverne Cox, famed advocate for transgender rights and critically acclaimed star of the Netflix comedy-drama "Orange is the New Black," posed for a photo with a UAlbany student after delivering the talk, “Ain’t I a Woman,” to a sold-out crowd in the Performing Arts Center’s Main Theater during Sexuality Week at the University.

Serving the Community
More than 200 students volunteered to weed, harvest, wash and box produce at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York in September, underscoring our campus commitment to the local community. Students were recruited from UAlbany Living-Learning Communities, which house freshmen and transfer students who share similar academic goals and interests.
UAlbany Spirit Past & Present
Thousands of UAlbany alumni, students, parents and friends gathered in October to participate in Homecoming, Family and Reunion Weekend. The events honored alumni achievers and hosted a routine by comedian and “Full House” star Dave Coulier, tours, a wine tasting, football’s homecoming game, and countless opportunities for current students and families to show their UAlbany spirit.
