Euricom

The European Institute for Communication and Culture (Euricom) is a non-profit organization devoted to research and publication in the general areas of mass communication, media studies, and cultural studies. In keeping with its unique position bridging the two parts of the formerly divided Europe, Euricom is concerned with the relationship of the mass media to issues of democracy and democratization.

For more than a decade Euricom has organized annual colloquia dedicated to topics within the general theme of the mass media and democracy. These colloquia usually take place in the historic Slovene fishing port of Piran and involve around 25 participants from around the world. The organizers attempt to ensure that the events contain both elements of continuity from previous colloquia and involvement of new scholars and fresh ideas. Contributions to the colloquia have been published in theme issues of the journal Javnost - The Public and in scholarly monographs.

Past Euricom colloquia have been held on the following topics:
· Democratization and the Media
· Information Society and Civil Society
· Media Systems in Transition
· Ethno-Religious Nationalist Conflicts and Communications
· Rethinking Access: Theory, Policy and Practice of Access to the Electronic Media
· Virtual Democracy: Implications of Electronic Communication for Democratic Politics
· The Future of Journalism
· Political Representation and Public Opinion
· Communication, Citizenship and Social Policy
· Media Ownership and Control in East-Central Europe
