Erich von Stroheim's slavish attention to detail helped make THE MERRY WIDOW his most commerically successful film. Based on Franz Lehar's operetta, it is a dramatic and romantic chronicle of an American widow who creates havoc with the royalty of Ruritania after she and her traveling dance troupe come to perform.
