Fiction Workshop (Spring 1998)

New York State Writers Institute Distinguished Writer-in-Residence John Montague and novelist Elizabeth Wassell will conduct a fiction workshop during the Spring 1998 semester.

The Fiction Workshop is scheduled for ten Wednesdays evenings (February 4, 11, 18, 25, March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1, 8) from 6 to 9 p.m. Classes will be held on the University at Albany's uptown campus. The workshop is offered free of charge for no credit, and will be limited to ten writers. To be considered, submit manuscripts to the Writers Institute according to the guidelines listed below. Due to the volume of manuscripts received from previouis workshops, we must insist that you follow the guidelines exactly.


Guidelines

  1. All manuscripts must be typewritten, doubled-spaced.

  2. All submissions must include a separate cover sheet with name, address, work and home telephone numbers, and the title of your submission. To insure a blind selection process, do not put your name on any other pages of your submission.

  3. Submit no more than 10 pages of fiction prose. Clearly indicate the title of the piece and what your submission is; i.e, a chapter of a novel, part of a chapter, part of a short story, etc.

  4. Be sure to keep a copy of your work as your manuscripts will not be returned to you.

  5. Writers enrolled in a University at Albany fiction writing class for the Spring 1998 semester, whether graduate or undergraduate, and writers who participated in the Fall 1997 Le Anne Schrieber workshop, are not eligible. Auditing of the class is not allowed.

  6. Manuscripts delivered in person will be accepted up until l:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 1998. Mailed manuscripts must be postmarked not later than Wednesday, January 7, 1998.

  7. Notification of acceptance will be by Wednesday, January 28, 1998. Please do not call regarding the status of your manuscript. We regret that neither Mr. Montague nor the Institute can comment on manuscripts by writers not selected.
