Justine Bateman: TV actress, writer, director and net neutrality activist Justine Bateman

Tuesday, October 9
Craft Talk — 4:15 p.m., Multi-Purpose Room, Campus Center West Addition, University at Albany
Presentation/Q&A — 7:30 p.m., Campus Center Ballroom, University at Albany

Justine Bateman originally read for a small role in the pilot of "Family Ties" and was then asked to audition for the part of superficial and materialistic Mallory Keaton, which she ultimately landed. Bateman starred in the primetime comedy from 1982 until 1989 and was nominated for two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award.

Her first book, Fame: The Hijacking of Reality (2018) is an “insider’s” analysis of America’s culture of celebrity and its profound impact on personal and national life. Ready Player One author Ernest Cline said, “Justine Bateman has crafted the most compelling and comprehensive treatise on the nature of fame that you’re ever likely to read.” In a recent article published in Vice, the reporter wrote of Fame: "It is the scariest book I’ve read all year. It reads like a horror novel, with fame as a sinister entity that can distort reality, make you question yourself, and turn friends, family, and the public against you."

An activist for net neutrality, Bateman has addressed the topic before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce. She earned a degree in Computer Science and Digital Media from UCLA in 2016, and is completing her first feature film as director.
