What If...

Ana Gallira

Artist's Statement

I drew this piece for a midterm assignment in a life drawing class last fall. The assignment asked that we draw a self-portrait, while excluding our face from that portrait. When given this assignment, I found myself facing the high possibility of enduring a pregnancy. This high probability made me nervous, and thus when I went to draw my self-portrait, focusing on my belly seemed natural for me. If I became pregnant, I felt that my belly would become the point on my body people would look to when they saw me. Further, my belly would be the place where all my attention would be focused. Through the portrait I hoped to express my fear of this possible unexpected pregnancy and the effects this condition may impose on unexpectant women.
