The University Commission for Diversity and
Affirmative Action (UCDAA) initially charged the Women's Concerns
Committee (WCC) with the responsibility of advising the Office
of Affirmative Action on policy affecting and involving women.
WCC, howver, also identifies and works on a variety of issues
affecting all campus women. All University women are welcome
and encouraged to join WCC.
The Women's Concerns Committee works through its subcommittees,
each of which typically chooses a project it can complete
within a semester or an academic year. The projects contribute
to the overall social change agenda of the University, the
University Commission for Diversity and Affirmative Action
(UCDAA) and the Office of Affirmative Action. The advantage
of WCC's subcommittees is that members are not required
to work on every project. University women can participate
in as many individual projects for which they have time.
There are several on-going events and activities which WCC
coordinates.
The Women's Concerns Committee offers women the opportunity
to create a more diverse and responsive educational and
work environment for all members of the University. WCC
also offers individual benefits to all women who join. Committee
members interact with people and department from all over
the campus and, therefore, gain a University-wide view of
issues which interest them. WCC provides a safe avenue for
professional development. Through their committee work,
members can develop and sharpen leadership skills needed
to advance their careers at the University.
We work to eliminate sexism, racism, classism and homophobia
at the University by:
- Actively addressing issues of discrimination and equality
on campus
- Advocating for all women's concerns and providing a
forum for discussion of all pertinent issues
- Improving avenues of communication among women with
diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Increasing membership of previously under-represented
classes of women on University Committees
We promote professional and personal development
for all women by:
- Enhancing the awareness of women regarding the possibilities
for professional development
- Increasing institutional awareness of the importance
of professional development for classified staff women
- Providing information, orientation and opportunities
for mentoring to all women, particularly those new to
the campus.
The work of the committee affects the entire University community,
but it particularly enriches the lives of those who participate
as committee members.
How to Participate in the Women's
Concerns Committee
The Women's Concerns Committee includes women
from across the University who are interested in working on
projects to enhance the quality of life for all women on campus.
Regardless of how much or how little time you have to offer,
the Women's Concerns Committee has a place for you! The committee
offers opportunities for you to work on existing projects,
as well as support for you to start your own project. Meetings
of the Women's Concerns Committee and the Council of Women's
Groups are typically held the first Thursday of each month
during the academic year. A summer meeting is held to plan
the agenda of activities for the following year.
More information on meetings is available
by subscribing to the
WCC listserv or by contacting Alison Olin at
