Criminal Justice Prepares for 30th in the Fall

The School of Criminal Justice will have as its major celebratory event of its 30th year a dinner on Wednesday, Sept. 16. The featured speaker will be Tom Constantine, currently director of the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, and formerly the Superintendent of the New York State Police. Constantine is also a 1972 M.A. graduate of the School of Criminal Justice.


New Russian Program

The Office of International Programs has announced the opening of a new program in Moscow. In conjunction with the Moscow Lomonosov State University, the six-week summer program, May 30 - July 1, is designed to provide intensive Russian language instruction at all levels and a Russian History and Culture course taught in English. The group will be accompanied by Charles Rougle of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.


Personal Safety Notes Achievers

The Office of Personal Safety and Off-Campus Affairs held two special events last week to promote the continued enhancement of a safe atmosphere on campus. On Thursday, student volunteers/staff led "Emergency Phone Awareness Day" to make the University community more aware of the more than 200 emergency phones on the three campuses. On Friday a "Don�t Walk Alone thank you reception" was sponsored by Don�t Walk Alone Safety Escort Service to recognize captains and student volunteers for a successful 1997-98 year. The 1000th escort and Nicole Oliver, coordinator of Don�t Walk Alone, 1996-98, was specially honored.


NECC Softball Champs Add to Great Albany Year

Lisa deSousa�s two-run single led Albany to a 5-1 softball win over Massachusetts-Lowell on April 27 and the Great Danes softball�s first-ever championship of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) � the sixth conference title for Albany in 1997-98. The team joins football, men�s cross country, women�s tennis, and men�s and women�s indoor track.

At publication time, the softball and men�s lacrosse teams await possible ECAC Div. II tournament berths. If accepted, they would join seven other Albany sports programs reaching that plateau this academic year.


Forum on Eastern Europe Privatization

The University at Albany Foundation and its Council for Economic Outreach will present a Community Forum Breakfast on "Privatization in Eastern Europe: Implications for U.S. Business." The event will be held on Monday, May 11, at 7:30 a.m. at the Albany Marriott.

Philip Dimitrov, Bulgarian Ambassador to the United Nations; Frank A. Pasciuto, chairman of IFS International; and William K. Holstein, a Distinguished Professor at the University, will be the featured speakers. University President Karen R. Hitchcock will give a welcome address. Robert W. Schwartz, managing director of Schwartz, Heslin, Pilarski and Associates, and chair of the Council for Economic Outreach, will give introductions.

Dimitrov is a former Prime Minister of Bulgaria. During his tenure in that post, democratic policies were established, the cabinet started a market-oriented reform, and privatization was introduced. In addition, ethnic tensions were reduced and Bulgaria became a European Union associate member. He is the author of two novels and a translator of fiction and specialized literature.

Pasciuto is a co-founder of IFS International, a Capital Region company which provides electronic funds transfer to banks in the U.S. and Europe. During his time at IFS he has been responsible for the development and marketing of four successful financial products. In February 1997 he led the effort to take IFS public, and it has since been traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Holstein, a Distinguished Professor in the University�s School of Business, has a B.S. in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in economics. As director of the Center for Private Enterprise Development in Budapest, Hungary, he developed a program to enhance Hungary�s private sector development. He has also served as a consultant to a number of international businesses in Taiwan, Israel, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia.

Since its establishment in 1967, the University at Albany Foundation has directed fundraising efforts on the University�s behalf. As a partner with the University, the Foundation, through its Council for Economic Outreach plays a significant role in supporting programs and research, which contribute to and stimulate the economic development of the Capital Region and New York State.
