The overarching goal of our lab is to determine how disruption of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function contributes to mood, addiction, and cognitive disorders.

Metabolic regulation of brain function, insulin signaling within the brain, the impact of diabetes and hypoglycemia on the hippocampus, links between diabetes and Alzheimer’s, amyloid effects on brain function, dietary manipulations. Experiments involve animal models, behavioral testing and in vivo neurochemical measurements as well as post-mortem brain protein analysis and other measures.

Neural Systems of Emotion and Memory Lab

The lab focuses on identifying neural pathways that form circuits responsible for adaptive and maladaptive fear related behaviors. To do this, we combine neuroanatomical, developmental, molecular biological and behavior approaches to define the ontogeny and function of neural pathways that control the learning, remembering and expression of fear.

Interests include the role of steroid hormones in neural development, maternal hormones, and cortical development.

Interests include animal models relevant to postpartum depression, impact of maternal experience (pregnancy and motherhood) on stress responses, cognition, depression-related behaviors, hippocampal neurogenesis and neuronal remodeling, with particular focus on lactation.
