Diversity Definition

A just community is always on guard against injustice, always asserting its dedication to justice. Diverse inclusion and participation that reflects the make-up of the society at large, is essential to building a just campus community. Institutional commitment to this goal is re-affirmed by the new name, Office of Diversity & Affirmative Action.

Diversity is a concept which acknowledges co-existence and interdependence. The idea of diversity helps us to envision that co-existence while we learn how to respect difference among and between all persons and groups. Simultaneously, diversity implies a dimension of commonality in the condition of being human and individually unique.

The principles of diversity and affirmative action acknowledge that a spirit of fairness and tolerance for difference will promote an environment of greater understanding and respect within our campus community.

The commitment to value diverse participation requires that members of the campus community also acknowledge responsibility for prevention of prejudice, hostility and barriers to opportunity based upon but not limited to age, race, ethnicity, sex, class, gender, disability, sexual orientation, culture, ideology, politics, religion, citizenship, marital status, job classification, rank, income, socioeconomic, geographic and regional difference.

The entire campus community benefits and profits intellectually and imaginatively from the talents and contributions of all members of the campus community. The UCDAA endeavors to encourage unifying strategies and provide opportunities to enhance understanding of what might make it possible for human beings to better understand one another's experience beyond stereotypes, labels and other artificial divisions or barriers.

Diversity Statement:

Diversity recognizes the interdependence of all, and asserts that justice and excellence can only be realized through:

  • access and opportunity;
  • the active pursuit of unifying strategies; and,
  • the creation of a climate of inclusion where everyone can achieve his or her full potential.

The University at Albany is striving to create a just community and maintains that diversity is essential to achieving excellence.
