Integrating College and Career Research
With the Job Shadow Experience

High School/School-Based, Work-Based Activity
Description:

The purpose of this activity is to have students research and explore career and college opportunities. Students learn about and evaluate career clusters. They also look at colleges offering degree programs in their chosen field.

Students follow a four-part procedure in gathering information for a research paper:
* Use of The Occupational Outlook Handbook to gather career information.
* Use of G.I.S program to locate information about schools offering degree programs in chosen area.
* Additional Periodical Research.
* A Shadowing Experience.

Students read and write about career choices and they connect this to colleges making a critical decision about contacting schools for information.

The teacher meets with the students and reviews the rough draft, always helping them find information.

A full day job shadow experience is the culmination of the activity. Students are required to use all four skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking to successfully complete their shadow experience. The interview portion is key because students need to listen effectively and respond with appropriate feedback.

Students utilize public-speaking skills while sharing their experiences from this project with the whole class.

Assessment Tools & Techniques:
A grading outline is available. Included in grading is business correspondence: a thank you letter, a visual aid for public speaking, and a college letter for specific catalogues.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
Instructional modifications are made so that students are working at seats, in the libraries, or at computers as necessary. Students are very mobile using the town public library and the school library to access information.

On the job shadow, students are in a real work environment. They must interview the experts in the field.

Materials: Computer access and ordinary research tools - three-ring binder, note cards, rough draft/final draft paper.

Time Required:
Planning the job shadows takes at least 1-2 weeks of employer contacts. The actual implementation of the project is 5-7 weeks which includes class instruction, library visitations, and the job shadow. Assessment takes 1 week to correct papers.

Reflections:
This project has helped all students think about their futures. It encompasses ELA and C-DOS learning standards required at a commencement level and integrates skills for career awareness. It also focuses closely on the SCANS skills. This activity has purpose and reflects the types of goals students need to attain to be successful.
