Welcome to TMU! Teaching
Mathematics for Understanding is designed to support
teachers in their efforts to help all students learn mathematics
with understanding and proficiency, through a flexible
choice of activities such as summer conferences, online
courses, planning sessions, and other embedded trainings. Through
this program, teachers will:
- strengthen understanding of important topics in middle
school mathematics.
- develop a framework for developing and implementing
mathematics curriculum that meets state standards, based
on what it means to teach and learn mathematics with
understanding.
- consider the ways that different groups of students
(by race, ethnicity, gender, and economic status) experience
mathematics instruction.
- become acquainted with instructional practice that
emphasizes mathematical reasoning, communication, and
problem-solving relevant to other subject areas and to
children’s lives.
- learn to assess and use children’s thinking
as a guide to planning instruction.
- develop strategies for effective mathematics teaching
of middle and elementary school aged children based on
these ideas.
