Teaching Mathematics for Understanding

Welcome

Welcome to TMU! Teaching Mathematics for Understanding is designed to support teachers in their efforts to help all students learn mathematics with understanding and proficiency, through a flexible choice of activities such as summer conferences, online courses, planning sessions, and other embedded trainings.  Through this program, teachers will:

  • strengthen understanding of important topics in middle school mathematics.
  • develop a framework for developing and implementing mathematics curriculum that meets state standards, based on what it means to teach and learn mathematics with understanding.
  • consider the ways that different groups of students (by race, ethnicity, gender, and economic status) experience mathematics instruction.
  • become acquainted with instructional practice that emphasizes mathematical reasoning, communication, and problem-solving relevant to other subject areas and to children’s lives.
  • learn to assess and use children’s thinking as a guide to planning instruction.
  • develop strategies for effective mathematics teaching of middle and elementary school aged children based on these ideas.
