UAlbany Task Force on Sexual Assault

Meeting Summaries

Summary of the 2/8 meeting:
The preliminary recommendations were presented to Provost Susan Herbst. Next steps, to include hosting open forums for the campus community, were also discussed.

Summary of the 2/7 meeting:
Preliminary recommendations, including sexual assault definitions, a logic model, and a list of victims' rights were reviewed and refined, in advance of presenting them to Provost Susan Herbst.

Summary of the 2/1 meeting:
Independent consultant Alan Berkowitz visited the UAlbany campus and met with the Task Force to discuss UAlbany's existing sexual assault prevention initiatives, as well as the Task Force's proposed recommendations.

Dr. Berkowitz also led a discussion on sexual assault prevention that was open to students, during which their thoughts and views on the subject were expressed.

Summary of the 1/22 meeting:
General recommendations of the Task Force were reviewed and discussed further. These were also discussed with Alan Berkowitz, the consultant on national best practices, in advance of his campus visit.

 

 

Summary points of the 12/14 meeting:

  • Special guest Delores Cimini, Assistant Director of the University Counseling Center, presented best practices in peer services.
     
  • Questions for the consultant on national best practices were formulated.

 

 

Summary points of the 12/5 meeting:

  • A student guest presented a proposal on student-initiated education, based on questions that were posed to the student members of the task force.
     
  • In the area of peer-based communication, strategies for involving student leaders to connect with the student body will be examined further.
     
  • Criminal law charges relating to sexual assault were examined within the context of date rape, drug-induced rape, and physically helpless rape. Clear examples of each will be worked on for University-wide dissemination.
     
  • The list of victims' rights will be made in user-friendly language and disseminated in different forms.

 

 

Summary points of the 11/28/06 meeting:

  • UAlbany students in a courtyardA list of sexual assault definitions -- both legal and operative -- including consent, will be reviewed.
     
  • The group will work on integrating language into the existing operative definitions of sexual assault that will highlight the fact that if a perpetrator is convicted, this person, upon release, must register as a sex offender.
     
  • The task force will continue to meet as a full group instead of forming into subgroups, to ensure that the wide array of member perspectives is maintained.
     
  • The group will further examine how off-campus issues are addressed.
     
  • A statement of victims' rights will be worked on.
     
  • A consultant on national best practices in the areas of peer services, re-culturing, communicating messages, victims' rights evidence, and faculty involvement will be sought to attend a future meeting of the task force.
     
  • On student perspectives, the need for peer-based programs was stressed. The culture continues to be examined.

 

 

Summary points of the 11/16/06 meeting:

  • UAlbany students in the Science LibraryHighlights of a UAlbany survey were reviewed pertaining to violence. It was noted that UAlbany scored close to the national average in categories of sexual violence. As to the percentage of UAlbany students receiving information on sexual assault and relationships, this was higher than the national average for both males and females.
     
  • An overview on several national best practices on peer education and prevention programs was provided. The group may consider inviting peer educators to future meetings.
     
  • The task force will examine the extent to which sufficient content is reaching students and whether new approaches are warranted.

  • A summary of faculty responses on the extent to which sexual assault is covered in coursework was provided.

  • The group will define its overarching focus and sub-issues, to include: measurement (incidence and correlates); reporting issues; response (criminal justice system and on-campus judicial system); services; education and prevention; and evaluation.

  • The student culture will be examined.

 

 

Summary points of the 11/9/06 meeting:

  • Paul Leonard with UAlbany studentsThe name of the task force was changed to "Task Force on Sexual Assault."

  • The group will inventory sexual assault initiatives that are currently available on campus and from a historical perspective.
     
  • National best practices will be surveyed.
     
  • Teaching faculty will be asked about the extent to which sexual assault is addressed in their coursework.
     
  • After review of collected information and data, subgroups will be formed.
