We also offer courses at Moscow State University in intensive Russian language, culture, phonetics, conversation, and Russian literature. A minimum of 1 year of college-level Russian is required. Direct enrollment into regular university courses with sufficient language skills. A summer program is also available. There is no language requirement for the summer program.

The first exchange program between the University at Albany and Moscow Linguistics University began in 1974 and for many years was the only exchange program between an American and a Soviet institution of higher education. Beginning in 1993, SUNY moved the undergraduate program to Moscow State University.

The City

Famous for its Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow became the capital of Russia and of the Soviet Union after the 1917 Communist revolution. With the demise of the Soviet Union, Moscow has become the Russian center of the arts, sports, mass media, and perhaps most important, politics. A city of approximately nine million people, Moscow has enough theatres, concert halls, stadiums, museums, clubs and restaurants to satisfy even the most social of students. As the seat of Russia's government and center of economic and social reform, Moscow also offers unlimited opportunities to witness and study the dynamic changes taking place in Russia with the accompanying euphoria of high hopes, fear of change, and challenges of an ever-changing economy.

The University

Founded in 1755, Moscow State University has long been the leading university of the former USSR and what is now Russia. Located in the Sparrow Hills (formerly Lenin Hills) one half hour by metro from Red Square, MSU has a student population of more than 30,000. The main building of MSU is reputed to be the largest university building in the world. With its numerous student clubs, sports facilities and cafeterias, MSU offers limitless opportunities to meet native students and make friends.

Course Offerings

We are excited to announce two new Russian Programs available to students with no prior Russian language skills. The programs are:

Intercultural Communication

Cultural Studies

We also offer the following programs for students with at least one year of college-level Russian:

Undergraduate Program: The undergraduate Russian language program at MSU is specifically tailored to meet the needs of U.S. students whose career goals will be served by a thorough knowledge of the Russian language and contemporary Russian society. The undergraduate program, organized solely for Albany by MSU’s Department of Foreign Languages, is for groups of 10 to 15 students each semester. It includes classes in Russian conversation, phonetics, grammar, literature, Russian culture, and contemporary press. Students with advanced Russian may opt by prior arrangement to take some or all of their courses in any academic field offered at MSU. The semester program offers students between 15 and 18 credits.

Graduate Program: The graduate Russian language program at MSU is designed to allow students to perfect their Russian and develop research skills. The program also allows students with advanced Russian to participate in classes offered by any department at MSU and to pursue individual research. The semester program offers students 6 to 12 graduate credits.

Graduate students may choose between two options depending on their language ability and academic goals. The Russian language and culture (Stranovedenie) program is organized for Albany for groups of six to ten students each semester by MSU's Department of Russian for Foreigners and includes classes in Russian conversation, translation (English to Russian), phonetics, grammar, and literature. Students in the Stranovedenie program are expected to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice and submit a paper based on their research after the completion of the program.

Students with advanced Russian or those who are otherwise capable of independent research may choose to be placed within an academic department to conduct full time research on a major project and take regular courses in their field. Researchers will be assigned an academic advisor at MSU to relate research or scholarly projects to MSU's system, facilitate requests for archival access, help arrange consultations with other MSU faculty, and assist in coordinating any research related travel.

The Summer Program consists of 18-20 hours per week of classes. The bulk of the time is spent in Russian language instruction for four credits. The remainder of the time is devoted to a culture and contemporary issues course for two credits. The actual course content varies depending on the interests of the student participants.

Excursions

In order to acquaint participants with the economic and cultural achievements of the Russian people, excursions are arranged, including a 3-day trip to St. Petersburg.

On-Site Support and Orientation

The group will have on-site support from a local person who serves as the coordinator of the University at Albany's regular semester programs.

The coordinator organizes a thorough orientation after arrival and is available to assist students with any issues that might arise throughout the semester.

A professor from the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at UAlbany accompanies the summer group to Moscow.

Housing

Housing is provided in one of the dorms at MSU. Typically students are accommodated in one bedroom in a two bedroom suite, with a bathroom and shower. Kitchens are available on each floor, and cafeterias are available on the lower floors.
