The Programs

The University at Albany's programs in Montpellier provide students with the opportunity to study at the Université de Montpellier or the Institut Méditerranéen de Langues for an academic year, semester or summer. Our programs allow students with an interest in the French language, French culture or European business the chance to enroll in courses taught either in a combination of English and French or entirely in French.

Semester and Academic Year Programs
The semester and academic year programs are divided into two types. In addition short internships or a credit-bearing community service option may be arranged as part of the semester or year-long programs.

Business Exchange Program at Montpellier 2

(English/French or all French): This program is available as a semester program or as a full academic year of study. Students take 4 credits of French language and culture each semester and additional credits of international business courses taught in English or French in the fall and in French only in the spring.

Business courses may include topics such as: Institutions and Economics (international political issues and European economics); Management and Marketing (basic principles of marketing); International Management (human resources and accounting); International Finance (finance, international law and monetary construction) and Information Systems (basic course in IS). Students in the English/French business program who remain for the academic year must attain a high enough level of French to take business courses taught in French during the spring semester.

In addition to earning SUNY credits, students who have junior status by the start of the program may be eligible for a French diploma in international business management at the end of the one-year program. This diploma is called the DUGCI: Diplome d'Universite de Gestion Commercial International, and further information about it can be found at http://www.univ-montp2.fr/~webiae.

French Language Program at Montpellier 3

This program is available as a three- or five-month program in the fall, a five-month program in the spring or an academic year program. Students enroll at the Institut d'Etudes Francaises pour Etudiants et Professeurs Etrangers in French language courses at all levels and may, if they are sufficiently advanced, study other topics in history, philosophy, history of art, literature and cinema. Further information about the language program can be found at http://iefe.univ-montp3.fr

The Summer Language Program at Montpellier 3

The summer language program at the Institut d'Etudes Francaises pour Etudiants et Professeurs Etrangers is designed for students who wish to study French and learn about French culture. This eight-week, six-credit program offers coursework at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. Small classes that meet daily are supplemented with independent study in the language lab.

There will be time for an excursion to Paris during the one-week mid-program break.

Course Offerings

Semester and Academic Year Programs

English/French Program: Features 4-6 credits of coursework in French language and culture as well as 9 to 12 credits of international business taught in English. French language and culture courses, offered at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels, help students build their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Business courses typically include: Institutions and Economics (international political issues and European economics); Management and Marketing (basic principles of marketing);
International Management (human resources and accounting); International Finance (finance, international law, and monetary construction); Information Systems (basic course in IS).

Students in the English/French program who remain for the academic year will take courses taught in French during the spring semester. In addition students who take the five-month option may complete a credit-bearing independent study project for 2 credits or an internship/ community service project for 3 credits. (There is an additional fee for arranging and supervising internships and service placements.)

French Program: Provides two distinct options that allow students to enroll in regular university courses taught in French. The first consists of business and economics courses at Montpellier II and includes training in French. The second offers French language and related subjects taught at Montpellier III. Because Montpellier II and Montpellier III are separate units, the two tracks cannot be combined, and students must select one or the other.

Summer Program
The summer program at the Institut Méditerranéen de Langues (IML) offers six credits of language and cultural studies at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. Small classes that meet Monday through Friday morning for 3 hours each day are supplemented with independent study in the language lab.

Housing & On-site Support

Participants live with host families. Housing arrangements and on-site support are organized by the staff of the Institut Méditerranéen de Langues (IML) at the University of Montpellier. Academic year students may request assistance in finding other types of housing.

At the start of each semester, there will be a mandatory on-site orientation program, including intensive instruction in French culture and civilization.
