A two-week cultural study tour focusing on the history and development of modern Dominican and Caribbean society. Topics will include questions of race, class, identity, popular movements, economic development, religious practices, music and contemporary art.


From Sugar to Tourism in the land of Baseball (2 days) The East of the Dominican Republic. San Pedro is more than baseball players. San Pedro de Macorís: Old San Pedro, meet the ¨Guloyas¨ (good lawyer). Cueva de las Maravillas, La Romana: Batey del Soco, Central Romana, Altos de Chavón.

Santo Domingo: The Old, The New and the Ugly (5 days) Colonial City. New residential areas. Poor Neighborhood. The Eurocentric approach. Museum, art centers, church and governments. The Outskirts. The slave route. Villa Mella, Palavé, Nigua.

North and Cibao Central: The Route of the conquerors (2 days) Isabela- Puerto Plata, Santiago, Moca, La Vega, Jarabacoa.
The border of Haiti: Poverty under the sun (2 days) The South of the Dominican Republic. San Juan de la Maguana (Religious Syncretism). Jimaní – the border and its tragedy. Lago Enriquillo - Bahía de las Aguilas. (Can we manage the future?)

COST: $2,150.00 paid to Albany + airfare and personal expenses

NOTE: This program requires a minimum of 12 participants to run.

The winter 2005-2006 program is running!!! Applications are still being accepted through the end of November.

COSTS INCLUDE tuition, cultural tours and excursion package, room with host families or in small hotels, meals (3 meals/day with families or the group), adminis-trative fees, instructional materials.

NOT INCLUDED airfare, tourist card and exit tax ($20), personal items
