The University is a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students. UAlbany prides itself on its diversity and commitment to social action and is proud alma mater to Harvey Milk, the first openly LGBTQ official elected to office in California.

There are numerous groups, departments, and clubs on and off campus that hold programs on LGBTQ issues. Through the Student Association, the Gender and Sexuality Concerns Office organizes the annual Northeast LGBTQ Conference on campus each April and works to provide resources and support for those students dealing with multiple identities and oppressions.
