Eight SSW Students Continue Katrina Rebuilding
Connecting students with long-term disaster-response efforts that include both physical rebuilding and the impact on displaced inhabitants, the SSW hosted its ninth service trip to New Orleans, devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. During the 2014 winter break, SSW students Amanda Bane-Cortlynd, Hasanai Badar, Rosalie Calcagno, Michael Fiske, Ashley Huie, Christine Leavitt, Nicolas Mojica, and Charles Orr traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana for a service learning trip. Associate Professor Dr. Loretta Pyles accompanied the students and provided them with educational mentoring as they analyzed and reflected on the complexities associated with post-disaster recovery policies. While in New Orleans they participated in a variety of activities and learning opportunities that included assisting with the rebuilding efforts.
