Center for Mental Health and Aging

Overview
Directed by Zvi D. Gellis, Ph.D., the Center for Mental Health and Aging provides information and training, and conducts rigorous applied research on mental health issues for older persons including behavioral interventions, health maintenance, and the effectiveness of health care delivery systems in home health care and behavioral health settings. The Center was established through a series of grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Aging, the John A. Hartford Foundation, New York State Office of Mental Health, New York State Office of the Attorney General, Institute for Geriatric Social Work, and the Research Foundation of the State University of New York.

Mission
The mission of the Center for Mental Health and Aging is to improve the lives of older persons living in the community.

The Center focuses on:

  • Screening for depression and anxiety in later life
  • Assessment and management of suicidal behavior in later life
  • Development of treatment strategies to achieve recovery
  • Development and testing of behavioral interventions for older persons
  • Improving quality of life in community-dwelling older persons
  • Transfer of evidence-based research to practice in home health and behavioral health settings
  • Training human services workers in detection of mental health disorders in older persons
