Non-Degree Masters of Social Work Program
The Non-Degree Social Work course of study provides an opportunity for applicants who wish to take social work courses without matriculating into the program. This route is an option for individuals who may have missed the deadline for the matriculated program and wish to get a head start on the process should they get accepted into the MSW program. This option should also be considered for those who may not be academically competitive for the MSW program. Once the application process is complete, please allow 2-3 weeks to receive a decision from the Graduate Education Office.
Instructions for Accepted Students
Once you have received notification of acceptance to Non-Degree study in the master's of social work program from the Office of Graduate Education. You should have also received information from the University about your personal identification number (PIN) and using MyUAlbany (the online student registration system).
The next step in the process is to obtain an Advisement Verification Number (AVN). This must be done to register for courses. You may obtain your AVN by requesting a seat in an approved Non-Degree course. Please follow the instructions below.
Requesting a Seat in a Course
- Review the Non-Degree Class Schedule and Non-Degree Course Descriptions for the upcoming semester and choose 1 or 2 classes that you wish to take and meet the prerequisites for.
- Complete the MSW advising form.
- Send form to SSWnondegree@albany.edu
- Form will be returned with Advisement Verification Number (AVN) within 3-5 days. The AVN is required to register.
- Register for any open section of approved courses.

Limitations of Non-Degree Study
Seats for non-degree students are limited. All requests are filled on a first come, first served basis. Please allow 3-5 business days for a response, as the process is not automated.
A non-degree student can take a maximum of 2 courses in Social Welfare per semester.
A maximum of 12 credits of graduate work taken at UAlbany as a non-matriculated student will automatically count toward the MSW degree if the credits fulfill MSW requirements at the time you matriculate and the courses were taken within 3 years of matriculation.
Non-degree students who receive a grade below “B” are not allowed to continue in the School of Social Welfare as a non-degree student.
