Research Interests

Hal A. Lawson is Professor of Social Welfare and Professor of Educational Administration and Policy Studies at the University at Albany, The State University of New York. He also works regularly in the School of Public Health. These interdisciplinary involvements reflect his interests in vulnerable children and families served by resource-strapped organizations such as schools and community agencies, which are located in challenging places—local, regional, national and international. This work addresses the terrible trilogy of poverty, social exclusion, and social isolation, and so it typically necessitates school, family, community, and higher education partnerships involving interprofessional collaboration, youth leadership, and participatory action research.

Lawson’s involvement includes “on the ground” leadership practice; grant-writing for local school districts; consultations for school districts, state and provincial education agencies as well as child and family services agencies; training and capacity-building for local organizations; services as an evaluation team member and leader; and, academic publications as well as technical assistance briefs. His international involvements include work in The Netherlands, Romania, Brazil, Iran, Australia, New Zealand, Slovakia, and England. In 2013, Lawson was awarded a collaborative leadership award from the National School Development Council in recognition of his outreach and engagement work in local school districts, especially the research-to-practice technical assistance he regularly provides. In 2014, he was recognized (with Michael A. Lawson) by the American Educational Research Association with its national award for the best research review, and he also received the UAlbany President’s Award for community engaged scholarship.
