Non-degree Course Descriptions
NEW APPLICANTS
(If you have taken non-degree courses, you should skip to the procedures for returning non-degree student ).
1) New applicants must apply for non-degree study directly
to the Graduate Admissions Office. Students new to non-degree
study must submit a non-degree
application and a transcript indicating completion
of their bachelor's or highest degree. There is an option
to either apply online or download the application from
the Graduate
Admissions web site and mail it in to:

If you have taken a non-degree course at the University
at Albany and a transcript that states you have a bachelor's
degree is already on file, you do not have to send another
transcript.
2) Once the application for non-degree study submitted,
e-mail the School of Social Welfare (sswnondegree@uamail.albany.edu)
to request a seat in a specific class. Be sure
to include:
a) your name (as it appears on the application),
b) your Albany identification number or social security
number, and
c) the course number and class section number of the course(s) you wish to take.
A representative of the School of Social Welfare will
reply to your email providing you with information on
how to proceed.
The Schedule
of Classes open to Non-degree Students include the
course numbers and class numbers. Course Descriptions
are available at: Graduate Courses Open to Non-Degree Students . Enrollment
is on a first come, first serve basis, so be sure to
apply early if you are interested in taking a course.
E-mails that do not include the course number
and class number will be significantly delayed in their
processing.
3) Once you are accepted for non-degree study, you will receive:
a. A letter from the Graduate Admissions office stating that you have been accepted for non-degree study,
b. Information from the University about your personal
identification number (PIN), and using MyUAlbany (the
online student registration system), and
c. An e-mail from the School of Social Welfare indicating
the advisement verification number (AVN), the permission
number that you will need to register for the course(s),
and the registration deadline. If seats in the requested
course(s) are not available, you will be given the option
to select a different class will be given, if appropriate.
The PIN, AVN, and the permission number are needed
in order to register. Be sure to keep this information
in a safe and easily accessible place.
4) Upon receipt of the PIN, AVN, and permission number,
you are able to register. All registration is on-line
and a computer with internet access is needed. Use MyUAlbany
( www.albany.edu/myualbany
), the online registration system to register. Tuition
liability is incurred after registration is completed.
A non-degree student can take a maximum of 2 courses
per semester.
A maximum of 12 credits of graduate work taken at UAlbany
as a non-matriculated student will automatically count
toward the MSW degree if the credits fulfill MSW requirements
at the time you matriculate and the courses were taken
within the 3 years of matriculation.

Returning Non-degree Applicants
Those who have recently applied as a non-degree student,
do not need to submit a new application. The procedures
for taking additional non-degree courses are as follows:
1) Review the class
schedule for non-degree students and the course
descriptions.
2) E-mail the School of Social Welfare, at sswnondegree@uamail.albany.edu to request a seat in a course(s). Be sure to include the course number and the class number in your e-mail.
3) If seats are available, a representative of the School
will reply to your email with the advisement verification

and your registration deadline. If seats in the requested
