MSW PROGRAM
Social work is an exciting profession that offers opportunities to work with many different populations in a variety of settings. At the University at Albany School of Social Welfare, we prepare students for the demanding and dynamic social work profession. Our alum hold clinical and administrative positions in hospitals, mental health agencies, schools, state government, children and family agencies, substance abuse clinics, and nursing homes.
The profession of social work is committed to helping people and communities identify, prevent, and solve problems. Graduate social workers should be able to help others reach the most satisfying social adjustment possible and to work for social conditions that will provide an equitable opportunity for individual fulfillment. Our students acquire the knowledge and skills that enable them to help alleviate social problems, gain a broad perspective in assessing social needs, and acquire the skills necessary to address needs and challenges of individuals, groups, and communities.
Our curriculum offers two areas of concentration. After the second semester of common generalist core courses, students concentrate in Clinical or MACRO (Management efficiency, Advocacy and empowerment, Community building, Resource development, and Outcome evaluation). Determination of the area of concentration is made prior to the end of the second semester.
The MSW program can be completed on a full time or
part time basis. An Advanced Standing program is available
for students who possess a recent degree from a baccalaureate
program accredited by CSWE. The school also offers several
joint programs: an MSW and Master's in Criminal Justice
(MA) at Albany, and an MSW and Master's in Sociology
(MA) with the State University of New York at New Paltz,
an MSW/Juris Doctorate (JD) with Albany Law School and
a joint MSW/PhD program in Social Welfare. In conjuction
with the University at Albany's Center for Women in
Government, a Certificate in Nonprofit Management and
a Fellowship in Women in Government are also available.
Dual programs in bioethics and public policy have been
proposed and a dual program with public health is being
developed. The School also offers a specialized MSW
program in aging called the Internships in Aging Project.
