HARTFORD WINS AMERICA EAST GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AT ORCHARD CREEK

UAlbany’s Diane Onofry & Jill Friedman Share Medalist Honors

     Altamont, N.Y. – Adriana DiLonardo fired a final-round 77 to lead Hartford to the America East Women’s Golf Championship on Tuesday, May 3 at the Orchard Creek Golf Club.

     Hartford trailed UAlbany by 11 strokes after the opening round, but combined for a team score of 317 to claim the title with a 36-hole total of 668. UAlbany placed second with 673 strokes. Boston University finished third with 687.

     UAlbany’s Diane Onofry and Jill Friedman earned co-medalist honors, finishing with a two-day total of 165. Friedman shot an 82 and Onofry carded an 83 in second-round play. Anne Lyons placed eighth for the Great Danes with a 170 (88-82).

     "I had a strong front nine today," said Onofry, who earned medalist honors at the 2004 championship. "Our team had a strong finish, improving seven strokes from Monday’s round. We played great, but Hartford played better."

     Hartford’s Juliana Carrillo, who had the day’s second-best score with a 79, and Boston University’s Brenna Gibson tied for third place with 166, one shot off the pace.

     "This is the lowest 36-hole total for our team this spring," said UAlbany coach Richard "Doc" Sauers. "We did what we had to do, but Hartford did it a lot better. I’m proud of our seniors and the way they finished their careers as co-medalists."

UALBANY LEADS AFTER FIRST ROUND OF AMERICA EAST GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

     Altamont, N.Y. – Diane Onofry and Jill Friedman fired their best rounds of the spring as UAlbany is in first place after the first round of the America East Women’s Golf Championship held on Monday, May 2. The 36-hole event is being held at the Orchard Creek Golf Club. Tuesday’s final round begins at 8:30 a.m.

     Onofry, who earned medalist honors at the 2004 championship, paced all golfers with an 82, including a three-over 39 on the back nine. The senior made par on four of the final five holes, including the 18th, a 481-yard, par-five.

     Friedman was one stroke behind, as she shot an 83 on the 5,801-yard, par-72 course. The Great Danes, who tallied a team score of 340, hold an 11-stroke lead over Hartford in the team standings. Boston U. is in third place with a score of 356. Kerry Hassell paced Hartford with an 85, while Brenna Gibson recorded an 86 to lead Boston U.

UALBANY AND ORCHARD CREEK HOSTS AMERICA EAST GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

     Albany, N.Y. – Diane Onofry, last year’s medalist, and the University at Albany women’s golf team will look to defend their titles at the 2005 America East Conference Championships on May 2 and 3. The stroke-play championship is a 36-hole event, with rounds of 18 holes each day to be held at the Orchard Creek Golf Club in Altamont.

     UAlbany, Boston University and Hartford will compete for the women’s championship with first-round play beginning at 11:50 a.m. Hartford, Binghamton and Boston U. will battle for the men’s title and will tee off at 11 a.m. The championship’s second round will start with the women at 8:30 a.m. followed by the men at 9:20 a.m.

     UAlbany returns three of its top five finishers from the 2004 championship squad. Besides Onofry, the Great Danes’ Jill Friedman and Anne Lyons placed second and fifth, respectively.

 

DIANE ONOFRY FINISHES 11TH TO LEAD UALBANY TO A FOURTH PLACE TEAM FINISH

      South Hadley, Mass. – UAlbany’s Diane Onofry shot a round of 87 to finish 11th overall to lead the Great Danes to a fourth-place team finish at the Northeast Intercollegiate Championships, held at The Orchard Golf Club on Sunday.

      The 36-hole tournament was shortened to one round due to rainy weather at the site of the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open.

      Jill Friedman was the second UAlbany finisher, placing 17th overall with a 17-over par score of 89 (45-44). Anne Lyons tied for 25th with a total of 91 (47-44), while Maggie Taylert was 36th individually with scores a total of 95. Freshman Samantha Williams was 32nd with a score of 94 (50-44).

      Jennifer Cronan led Harvard to the team title, finishing first individually with a six-over par score of 78 (38-40). Harvard posted a team score of 331. Middlebury was second as a team with 349 strokes, followed by Hartford (351), UAlbany (356) and Amherst (362).

UALBANY WOMEN’S GOLF FINISHES IN EIGHTH PLACE AT HARTFORD INVITATIONAL

     West Hartford, Conn. – Hofstra’s Caitlin Munroe won medalist honors and St. John’s captured the team title at the Hartford Invitational on Tuesday, April 12 at the Wampanoag Country Club. UAlbany finished eighth in the two-day, 36-hole tournament.

     Munroe shot a final-round 82 to edge Long Island’s Shauna Wilde by one stroke. Siena’s Jillian Blanchard fired a pair of 83s to finish in third place. Munroe, who was tied for fifth after the first round, made up a two-shot deficit on the final day. First-round leader Jennifer Rhee, of St. John’s, slipped into a tie for fourth with an 87 over the final 18 holes. The Red Storm easily took first in the team scoring with a 24-stroke advantage over Hartford.

     Freshman Maggie Taylert tied for 18th place to lead the Great Danes, who had a two-round score of 723. Taylert carded an 86 over the par-73, 5,872-yard layout to go with her opening-round 88. Diane Onofry tied for 25th with an 89 in each round, will Jill Friedman’s final-day 87, nine strokes better than her first 18 holes, moved the senior into a tie for 34th place.

UALBANY WOMEN’S GOLF NINTH AFTER FIRST DAY AT HARTFORD INVITATIONAL

     West Hartford, Conn. – UAlbany’s Maggie Taylert finished the day tied for 17th with a first-round score of 88 to lead the Great Danes to a ninth-place team finish at the University of Hartford Women’s Golf Invitational at Wampanoag Country Club on Monday, April 10.

     Diane Onofry finished the day tied for 23rd with a score of 89, while Anne Lyons was 33rd with a round of 92. Jill Friedman was the fourth finisher for the Great Danes with a first day score of 96. Lauren Bruce rounded out the UAlbany field, ending the day with a score of 100.

     St. John’s Jennifer Rhee led the field with a round of 80, helping the Red Storm to a first-day lead with a score of 340.

     The Hartford Invitational will conclude on Tuesday, April 12.

UALBANY WOMEN’S GOLF FOURTH AT FAIRFIELD SPRING INVITATIONAL

     Myrtle Beach, S.C. – UAlbany’s Anne Lyons shot rounds of 85 and 87 to lead the UAlbany women’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Fairfield Spring Invitational, held at Heather Glen Golf Links and Possum Trot Golf Club.

     Lyons final round of 87 gave her a two-day total of 172 to finish seventh in the individual standings. Veronica Lopes of Long Island was the individual champion, finishing with a 36-hole score of 159 (76-83).

Jill Friedman was second for the Great Danes, shooting 88 at Heather Glen, followed by an 85 at Possum Trot for a total score of 173. Diane Onofry had a two-round total of 178 (92-86), followed by Maggie Taylert (91-90—181) and Lauren Bruce (95-88—183).

Long Island won the team championship with a score of 663 (332-331). Charleston Southern was second (350-344—694) with the host team Fairfield in third (351-348—699). Bellarmine ( Ky. ) was fifth in the team standings with a two-day score of 769.

UALBANY WOMEN’S GOLF FINISHES 10TH AT BUCKNELL FALL CLASSIC

     Lewisburg, Pa. – Diane Onofry finished tied for 33rd with a two-day score of 171 to help lead the UAlbany golf team to a 10th-place team finish at the Bucknell Fall Classic, which concluded on Sunday, Oct. 24.

     Onofry shot 84 on the second day of play to finish 29-over par. Lauren Bruce shot a two-day total of 172 to finish tied for 35th for the Great Danes. Also competing for UAlbany were Jill Friedman (90-85—175), Maggie Taylert (90-87—177) and Anne Lyons (92-87—179).

     Harvard’s Katie Loncke finished first individually with a two-day total of 151. Brittany Lambertson and Maggie Steciuk of St. John’s finished second and third, respectively, to lead the Red Storm to a first-place team finish.

     St. Francis (Pa.) was second in the team standings, followed by Harvard, Bucknell and Brown.

     The Bucknell Fall Classic rounded out fall play for the UAlbany team.

UALBANY WOMEN’S GOLF 14TH AFTER FIRST ROUND OF BUCKNELL FALL CLASSIC

     Lewisburg, Pa. – UAlbany’s Diane Onofry shot a first-round score of 87 to finish tied for 38th at the end of the first day of play at the Bucknell Fall Classic held at the Bucknell Golf Club on Saturday, Oct. 23.

     Tarah Schloss of St. Francis (Pa.) led the field after the first round of play, finishing four over with a score of 74. St. John’s Brittany Lambertson was second individually with a score of 75, putting the Red Storm in first in the team standings with a combined score of 312.

      Onofry was the Great Danes’ top finisher for the day, followed by Jill Friedman, who tied for 56th with teammates Lauren Bruce and Maggie Taylert, all with scores of 90. Anne Lyons also competed for UAlbany, finishing tied for 64th with a score of 92.

     The Great Danes will continue play on the final day of the Bucknell Fall Classic on Sunday, Oct. 24, starting at 8 a.m.

WOMEN’S GOLF TIES FOR EIGHTH PLACE AT RUTGERS INVITATIONAL

     Albany, N.Y. – Senior Jill Friedman carded a final-round 83 to tie for 17th place overall, as UAlbany finished in a tie for eighth place in the team standings at the Rutgers Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 16.

     St. John’s Jaclyn Sanders fired an even-par 72 over the final 18 holes to edge teammate Brittany Lambertson by a single stroke to win medalist honors. The Red Storm overhauled first-round leader St. Francis, Pa. to take the team title by 12 shots. Hartford was third, while Columbia placed fourth. The Great Danes put together a team score of 669 and were 57 strokes off the champion’s pace.

     Friedman, who shot a season-best 78 in the first round, finished with a 36-hole score of 161 over the par-72, 5,847-yard Rutgers Golf Course. Anne Lyons had a pair of 83s to end up in a tie for 30th place. Maggie Taylert (tie, 37th), Lauren Bruce (tie, 44th) and Diane Onofry (tie, 48th) were each among the top-50 finishers.

WOMEN’S GOLF IN TENTH PLACE AFTER RUTGERS INVITATIONAL FIRST ROUND

     Piscataway, N.J. – Senior Jill Friedman fired a season-best six-over-par 78, as UAlbany stands in 10th place after the opening round of the Rutgers Invitational on Friday afternoon. The 36-hole tournament concludes tomorrow, with the final round set to get underway at 7:30 a.m.

     St. Francis, Pa. holds a one-stroke lead over St. John’s in the team standings, while Hartford and Georgetown are tied for third. The Great Danes are 27 shots off the pace with an opening-day total of 333.

     Friedman is tied for 17th among the top individuals after carding a 37 over the last nine holes to go with a front-nine 41 on the par-72, 5,847-yard Rutgers Golf Course. St. John’s Brittany Lambertson shot an even-par 72, and has a three-stroke advantage heading into the final round. Lambertson got off to a hot start with a 34 on the front side. Juliana Carrillo (Hartford), Samantha Milosh (St. Francis) and Yvonne Kukora (Lehigh) each had a 75.

     UAlbany’s Anne Lyons is tied for 32nd place after carding an 83. Maggie Taylert is in 43rd postion with an 85, while Lauren Bruce is tied for 49th after an 87.

UALBANY WOMEN’S GOLF TIES FOR FOURTH PLACE AT BLUE DEVIL INVITATIONAL

     New Britain, Conn. – Diane Onofry carded her second consecutive 83 to finish in a tie for eighth place, as UAlbany shared fourth in the team standings at Central Connecticut State’s Blue Devil Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 9. The two-day tournament was held at Stanley Quarter Golf Course, a par-72, 5,849-yard layout.

     Central Connecticut State’s Leah Steinmiller backed up her opening-round 75 with an 82 to win medalist honors by two strokes over Hartford’s Andriana DiLonardo. Audry Longo, of Mount Holyoke, finished third, as her team edged first-round leader Hartford by two shots to take the team title. Fairfield had a 36-hole total of 678, while UAlbany and Central Connecticut State were eight strokes off the pace in fourth.

     Onofry, who tied for eighth with a two-round score of 166, was among three UAlbany golfers in the top 25. Jill Friedman tied for 11th by following a first-round 81 with an 87 over the final 18 holes. Lauren Bruce shot 83 and 91, respectively, to tie for 22nd place.

UALBANY WOMEN'S GOLF IN SECOND AFTER FIRST DAY AT BLUE DEVIL INVITATIONAL

     New Britain, Conn. – University at Albany’s Jill Friedman carded a nine-over-par 81 on Friday, Oct. 8, as the Great Danes are tied second after the opening round of Central Connecticut State’s Blue Devil Invitational. The 36-hole tournament at Stanley Quarter Golf Course concludes on Saturday, with the final round beginning at 9:00 a.m.

     Hartford leads by six strokes over UAlbany and Central Connecticut State in the team standings. The Blue Devils’ Leah Steinmiller turned in the best round of the day with a 75, and is one shot better than Hartford’s Adrianna DiLonardo and Long Island’s Veronica Lopez.

     UAlbany’s Friedman is tied for seventh place among the top individuals. Her teammates Diane Onofry and Lauren Bruce each fired an 83 over the par-72, 5,849-yard course.

JILL FRIEDMAN CARDS 82 TO LEAD UALBANY GOLF IN ORCHARD CREEK QUADRANGULAR 

     Altamont, N.Y. – Hartford’s Juliana Carrillo earned medalist honors at UAlbany’s quadrangular match at Orchard Greek Golf Course on Saturday, October 2. Carrillo fired a 77 to finish first out of 16 players.

Siena finished with the lowest team score at 324, edging out Hartford by three strokes. UAlbany carded a 337 on the day, while Fairfield tallied 346.

     Jill Friedman was the top UAlbany finisher, shooting an 82 for the day, while Diana Onofry tied for eighth with an 83. Anne Lyons also placed in the top 10 with an 84.

     UAlbany plays at the Central Connecticut State Invitational on Oct. 8-9.

UALBANY WOMEN’S GOLF FINISHES FIFTH AT MT. HOLYOKE INVITATIONAL

     South Hadley, Mass. – UAlbany’s Jill Friedman placed ninth overall with a two-day score of 164 to lead the Great Dane golf team to a fifth place finish at the Mt. Holyoke Invitational. The tournament was held at The Orchards, host of the 2004 Women’s U.S. Open.

     Friedman shot two rounds of 82 over 36 holes to tie her with McDaniel’s Garnett Pumphrey for ninth place individually.

     Diane Onofry finished with a score of 164 (83-84) to finish tied for 13th overall for the Great Danes while Anne Lyons shot a 185 (95-90) to place 38th.

     McDaniel’s Kelly Cramp took the individual championship with a score of 154 (80-74). Wellesley’s Susan Choi was second (79-76—155) while Mt. Holyoke’s Audry Longo finished third (78-80—158). Jaclyn Sanders of St. John’s (81-79—160), Hartford’s Juliana Carrilo (81-80—161) and St. John’s Brittany Lambertson (82-79—161) rounded out the top five.

     With three players in the top ten and all six players in the top fifteen, St. John’s claimed the team championship with a two-day score of 645 (329-316). Hartford was second in team scoring (337-338—675) while McDaniel (345-350—695), Boston University (343-354—697) and UAlbany rounded out the top five.

     Lauren Bruce (40th, 99-89—188) and Maggie Taylert (47th, 99-95—194) also competed for UAlbany.

     The Great Danes will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 2 as they compete against crosstown-rival Siena along with Fairfield and Hartford in Altamont, N.Y.

UALBANY WOMEN’S GOLF FINISHES 11th AT DARTMOUTH INVITATIONAL

     Hanover, N.H. – UAlbany’s Diane Onofry shot a two-day total of 164 to finish in a tie for 19th at the Dartmouth Women’s Golf Invitational on Friday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Hanover Country Club. The Great Danes finished with a team score of 692, placing them in 11th overall.

     Onofry, one of four seniors on the UAlbany squad, shot an 83 on the first day, followed by a second-round 81over the par-72, 5,803-yard course.

     Yale’s Cindy Shin won the individual championship with a two-day score of 154, while leading the Bulldogs to the team title. Teammate January Romero was second overall with an 11-over total of 155.

     Great Dane senior Anne Lyons finished tied for 28th overall with a score of 167 (83-84) while senior Jill Friedman was 49th with a two-day total of 172 (86-86). Freshman Maggie Taylert (98-94) made her first appearance for the Great Danes, while senior Lauren Bruce (95-101) also competed for UAlbany.

     St. John’s finished second in the team standings with a two-round total of 647. Harvard took third place, while host Dartmouth and Brown rounded out the top five in the team standings.

     The UAlbany women’s golf team will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Mt. Holyoke Invitational. The Orchards Golf Club, site of the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open, is the host club.
