Aarnio begins his seventh season as the head coach of the University at Albany men’s soccer program. In 2005 he led UAlbany to the America East Conference tournament semifinals for the second consecutive season. Aarnio also saw two of his players, Yan Gbolo and Stephan Hall, garner all-conference accolades. In six years with the program, Aarnio has led the Great Danes to 50 victories, their first America East regular-season title and has guided 12 of his players to all-conference honors.Aarnio, who has over 20 years of collegiate and professional coaching experience, guided the Great Danes to a 12-4-2 record in 2004 and the program’s first-ever America East regular-season crown. Additionally, Bouna Coundoul earned his second conference goalkeeper of year award in three years. In 2006, Coundoul became UAlbany’s first soccer player to play in the professional ranks in 2006, appearing in five games for MLS’ Colorado Rapids and recording two shutouts. Aarnio also served as head soccer coach for the men’s and women’s teams at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1992-97. He led the men’s program to a pair of NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. His 1996 team posted a 14-3 record and won the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championship. As women’s head coach, the Redhawks were a combined 32-12-3 over a three-year period, capturing the 1996 ECAC Mid-Atlantic title with a 16-1 record. He has also coached the Olympic Development Program (ODP) in Region 1. In the professional ranks, Aarnio was the head coach and director of team operations for the Milwaukee Wave in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) from 1990-92. Aarnio also served as head coach of the NPSL’s Montreal Impact in 1997. In addition, he was a part of six professional championships as an assistant coach with the San Diego Sockers of the NPSL and MSL during the 1980s. Aarnio earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from San Diego State University in 1978, where he was a two-year varsity midfielder for the Aztecs. A native of Rancagua, Chile, Aarnio is fluent in Spanish, Italian, French and English.
Bevers enters his fifth season as UAlbany’s assistant men’s soccer coach. Bevers recently served as the director of soccer training for Euro Futbol United, a premier youth level club team in Vestal, N.Y. He was involved in the training and coaching of eight youth teams and handled organizational tasks such as scheduling, travel, budgeting and fundraising. Euro Futbol United won consecutive under-18 boys regional indoor championships in 2000 and 2001, including winning the first State Cup for the Binghamton District in 12 years. Bevers also held ownership of Soccer Xtra, an academy that specialized in small-group training and clinics for youth, ages 12-17. In addition, he coached the girls’ varsity soccer team at Norwich High School in 2001 and led the Purple Tornadoes to their first winning season in school history with an 11-6 record. Bevers, who previously assisted with the Binghamton High School boys’ soccer program, also coached for the State NY-E Olympic Development Program (ODP). A native of Warnsveld, Netherlands, Bevers has 20 years of playing experience at the top amateur level in Holland. He holds two coaching diplomas from the Royal Dutch Soccer Association and has seven years of coaching experience at the Dutch Premier Youth Level. Bevers received a bachelor’s degree in leisure management from the Leisure Management School in Leeuwarden, Netherlands in 1997.
Pfeil enters his fourth season as a men’s soccer assistant coach and 13th overall with the program. Pfeil, who served as the team’s head coach from 1991-1999, works primarily with the team’s goalkeepers. Prior to UAlbany, where he posted three campaigns of 10 wins or more and received four post-season tournament bids, he served as the women’s head coach at Hudson Valley Community College from 1988-90. He is a "founding father" of the Capital District Youth Soccer League and was vice president of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association. He is an Olympic Development Program coach for the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association. A member of the coaching staff for the women’s 19-under national team, Pfeil graduated from SUNY-Cortland in 1971. A physical education teacher in the Shenendehowa school system, Phiel currently resides in Clifton Park with his wife, Ginny, and their three children. |
