UALBANY CROSS COUNTRY TO COMPETE AT AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS

Albany, N.Y. - The University at Albany men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the America East Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29. This year's championships will be held at Binghamton University's campus course, the first time the Bearcats will host the conference meet.
The women compete at 11:00 a.m. on a 5,000-meter course. UAlbany will look to Alyssa Lotmore, who has been the top finisher for the Great Danes in each of their five races this season, to lead the women's squad. Lotmore has won two of the five meets this season, the Monmouth Kickoff Classic on Sept. 3, and most recently the George Mason Invitational on Oct. 1. Freshmen Jenna Ortman and Jessica Ortman, twin sisters who have been among the team's top runners throughout the fall, should also be competitive in the field.
The men will compete on an 8,000-meter course at 12 noon. UAlbany's Robbie Freeman, who finished sixth overall last year with a time of 24:39, is the squad's leading runner this season. Freeman has been the men's top finisher in four of their fives races this season and is coming off a seventh-place showing at the UAlbany Invitational on Oct. 15. Ricardo Estremera has also turned in solid performances throughout the season, and he'll be in the hunt for his fourth top-10 finish of 2005.
UAlbany is vying for its first-ever team championship since joining the America East Conference in 2001. The conference has sponsored a men's cross country championship since 1988, while the first women's championship was held in 1989.

NEW HAMPSHIRE SWEEPS 39TH ANNUAL UALBANY CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

Albany, N.Y. - Jodie Schoppmann of SUNY-Potsdam and Max Feldman of Connecticut won individual championships at the 39th Annual UAlbany Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 15. New Hampshire's men's and women's squads won the team titles. More than 600 athletes represented 31 schools at the event.

Schoppmann covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:47.9 to win the Bobbi Palm Women's Championship Race. New Hampshire's Catherine Parker finished fourth in 17:46.0, as the Wildcats won their second consecutive women's championship. UAlbany's Alyssa Lotmore (Bishop Maginn) placed sixth with a time of 18:04.1, helping the Great Danes to an eighth-place team finish.

"This is the course I train on every day," said Lotmore, who earned her fourth top-ten finish this season. "Everyone out there had the same conditions. I had my shoes taped before the race so they wouldn't fall off since there was a lot of mud on the course. I just focused on the people ahead of me to see what path they were running and if they slipped."

In the 8,000-meter R.K. Munsey Men's Championship Race, Feldman established a course record of 24:46.0. Matt Russell finished fifth with a time of 24:59.4 to lead New Hampshire's title efforts. Robbie Freeman paced UAlbany with a seventh-place finish, completing the race in 25:06.7, as the Great Danes placed eighth in the team standings.

"The course was really muddy," said Freeman, who recorded his second straight top-ten finish at this event. "It was a lot better that it had stopped raining. But, a few people fell on the course, since the footing was really tough. The muddiness makes for a slower race."

UAlbany's Jenna Ortman placed ninth with a showing of 18:13.6, while Ricardo Estremera finished 10th in the men's race, with a time of 25:14.5.
