University at Albany "Great Danes"

America East Conference Champions

2006 NCAA Tournament Participant

The Great Danes put together their most celebrated season at the Division I level in 2006, winning the America East championship and earning a berth in the NCAA tournament. UAlbany won just five games and finished last in the America East standings two years ago.

UAlbany put together a Division I record with 21 single-season victories over the course of the year en route to its first America East regular-season title and tournament championship. The Great Danes also achieved several other notable accomplishments.

A Season of Accomplishments...

... program's Division I record for single-season victories (21) ...

... most America East Conference wins (13) since joining the league in 2001-02 ...

... first-ever America East regular-season title and tournament championship ...

... most home wins (10) as a Division I program ...

... most road victories (8) since moving to Division I ...

... defeated Boston U. for the first time since joining the league ...

... eight-win improvement from previous season and 16 more wins than 2003-04 ...

... first America East Conference postseason tournament victory ...

... won first postseason game since 1995 to end a nine-game losing skid ...

... reached America East tournament semifinals and championship for first time ...

... first NCAA Division I tournament appearance ...

The Great Danes reached the America East tournament championship for the first time since joining the conference in 2001-02. In front of a sold-out crowd at the Recreation and Convocation Center and a national audience watching on ESPN2, UAlbany soundly defeated Vermont, 80-67, to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

On Sunday, March 12, the NCAA announced that UAlbany, a No. 16 seed, would face Connecticut, a No. 1 seed, at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center on March 17.  A No 16 seed had never beaten a No. 1 in the history of the NCAA Tournament, but UAlbany players and fans adopted a mantra of, "Why not us?"

The Great Danes pressured the Huskies much of the game, leading 50-38 with only 11:34 remaining. America East player of the year Jamar Wilson led UAlbany with 19 points, but second-ranked UConn would pull away in the final minutes of the contest for a 72-59 win.

"We made it a point to really enjoy this experience," commented head coach Will Brown after the game. "I could not have been prouder as a coach for these kids. It’s amazing where they were and where they are now. The seniors have left their mark on this program."
