The University at
Albany's indoor complex is complemented by fine outdoor facilities, including University
Field, which seats capacity crowds of 10,000 for football
games, and has an all-weather, 400-meter track surrounding a natural grass
surface.
University
Field is home to the UAlbany football and men's and women's track &
field
teams. The lighted field can accommodate both day and night
events. In 2004, the men's lacrosse program played its
first-ever evening contest at the facility.
On the roof of the
adjacent Physical Education building there is a media facility,
home and opponent video locations, and a viewing box for use by
the University President and other dignitaries. Inside the
PE Building are home, away and officials' locker room
facilities. Directly adjacent to the field, the UAlbany
football locker room was renovated in the spring of 2003.
The project, funded through alumni donations, doubled the size of
the Great Danes' previous facilities.

Varsity Field is
the on-campus home for men's and women's soccer in the fall, and
men's and women's lacrosse in the spring. The natural grass
playing surface is adjacent to the practice fields for each of the
teams and easily accessible from the Recreation and Convocation
Center (RACC) locker
rooms. In
the spring of 2004, the wood bleachers at Varsity Field were
removed, and a new set of raised metal bleachers with a press box
was installed. Along with providing athletic staffers and
media personnel an expanded and indoor workspace, the press box
removed game personnel from the sidelines and improved sightlines
for all spectators. |

ALBANY
FIELD (SOFTBALL) |
|

|
Albany
Field, just to the west of the Physical Education Building and
University Field, serves as the home venue for the UAlbany
softball program. The facility has been used throughout the
program’s transition from the NCAA Division III level to its
present Division I affiliation. Albany Field hosted its
first-ever Division I softball doubleheader on March 26, 2000, as
the Great Danes earned a split with Bucknell. Albany
Field received significant upgrades prior to the spring of
2004. A brand-new outfield fence was added with a warning track. Windscreens
with a yellow fence cap were added to the fencing, improving the
field's playing conditions and its
aesthetic look. New foul poles were added, a bullpen was
constructed beyond the left field fence, and an inning-by-inning scoreboard was installed in left-center
field. Future plans include the construction of bleachers and press box facilities. |

Varsity Field has
served as the University at Albany’s on-campus baseball stadium
for more than 30 years. The facility has been used throughout the
program’s transition from the NCAA Division III level to its
present Division I affiliation. On March 24, 2000,
Varsity Field hosted the school’s first-ever Division I baseball
contest, when the Great Danes defeated Canisius, 9-1.
Varsity Field received significant
upgrades prior to the spring 2004 season. The left field
fence was pushed back to 346 feet down the line and 388 feet in
the gap, while a section of the center
field fence was raised 20 feet (effectively lengthening its
playing distance). Additionally, windscreens with a yellow
fence cap were added to the fencing, improving the field's playing
conditions and its aesthetic look.
Other improvements include a warning track inside the outfield
fence, new foul poles, flags representing each America East
Conference school erected on the center-field fence, and new bullpens
and hitting cages beyond the left-field fence. An inning-by-inning scoreboard
is expected to be installed in right-center field in the fall of
2004. Future plans include the
construction of bleachers and press box facilities.

PRACTICE FIELDS
The
practice fields on the Western Avenue side of campus were renovated in
June 1996 with 263,000 square feet of two-inch thick athletic sod. The
irrigation system was refurbished, and the area was surrounded with a
3,100-foot chain-link fence.
The practice fields also
serve as the summer home to the New York Giants, who have held their
National Football League summer training camp at UAlbany since 1996.
OUTDOOR
RECREATION FACILITIES
There
are 24 tennis courts (12 with lighting), four basketball and six
volleyball courts; and numerous fields for football, soccer, softball,
baseball, lacrosse, field hockey, and other events.
