UAlbany won five of its last six games last season to finish in a tie for third place in the Northeast Conference standings. The 2006 signing class is comprised of 10 players from the state of New York and eight from New Jersey, plus three from Florida, and one each from Georgia, Texas, Rhode Island and Ohio. "We addressed our needs at linebacker and cornerback, plus picked up a group of capable tailbacks, three good wideouts and some solid offensive linemen. Now that the program is able to offer scholarships, we can spread ourselves into bigger and better high school football hotbeds and take another step up in terms of the people we can talk to." The Great Danes landed five all-state players from New York, including running back Colin Simmons, the Syracuse Post-Standard's Co-Player of the Year. "It was a little sloppy on both sides - it's tough to play when it's windy and cold," said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team edged seventh-ranked Massachusetts in its last outing four days ago. “We couldn't get much going and were lagging. After beating a nationally-ranked team, you have such an emotional high that it's hard to have the same enthusiasm in the next game." The Great Danes roared to a 5-2 lead after the opening period. Merrick Thomson, who moved into third place on the school’s all-time list with 111 goals, and Martocchia each scored twice in the quarter, while Frank Resetarits added the first of his two goals. UConn’s Josh Boone had nine of his 13 points in the opening period. The Huskies, who have won two national championships in their history, shot 58.7 percent from the floor on 27-of-46 attempts. A mere 23-hundredths of a second separated the runner-up from the fifth-place finisher. "Right now, I'm so excited that I'm out of my mind," said Burns, who improved on his UAlbany standard in the event by 83-hundredths of a second. "Fifth place was probably better than anyone expected. UALBANY BASKETBALL WINS AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP AND EARNS FIRST NCAA BERTH Albany, N.Y. -- Jamar Wilson scored 29 points in leading UAlbany to its first-ever America East Conference championship and NCAA Division I tournament berth in an 80-67 victory over Vermont before a capacity crowd of 4,538 fans on Saturday, March 11 at the Recreation and Convocation Center. UAlbany (21-10) rolled to an 18-4 lead in the opening seven minutes and never trailed. Lucious Jordan scored seven of his 18 points in that outburst, including a three-point field goal from the top of the arc on his team's first possession. Wilson added a three-point play when he was fouled in transition. Brian Lillis' tip-in of a missed foul shot and Jordan's driving layup finished the run. Vermont (13-17) captured the previous three America East titles, but the Catamounts could never get closer than 10 points the rest of the way. UVM was held to 8-of-26 shooting in the period. Meanwhile, Wilson, the championship MVP, buried a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give his squad a 44-26 lead at the intermission. In the second half, Wilson, who made 10-of-18 from the floor and tied a season-high with eight rebounds, increased his team's lead to 58-36 when he made another three-point play when he was fouled while going underneath a defender to the basket. The Great Danes, who have won 19 of their last 23 games, would later push out to a 27-point advantage when Jordan drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner with 7:14 remaining. "We have a lot of talent and a lot of depth," said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose team was just 5-23 overall two years ago. "We have a lot of guys who can make plays and, obviously, we have a guy like Jamar Wilson who can really put up some points on the board quickly." Vermont's Mike Trimboli, the league's rookie of the year, led his team with 16 points. Josh Duell added 13 points, while Chris Holm, a 6-foot-11 center, had 12. The Catamounts were the third UAlbany opponent in this tournament to be held under 40 percent from the field. "My goal when I got here was to put this program in a position to compete for an America East title every year," Brown offered. "We've won one this year and I don't see why we can't compete for another one next year." UAlbany's Brent Wilson, who eight points and four rebounds, joined Wilson and Jordan on the America East all-championship team. Jon Iati and Levi Levine, who started on that five-win squad in 2003-04, added eight and seven points, respectively, off the bench. "It's a dream," said Wilson, the 2006 America East player of the year. "Games like this with everything on the line, you have to give it your all. Since conference play started, we've been in first place and we've had a target on our back, and it's harder to play that way."

Al Barbato and Rashad Barksdale both singled and scored on a base hit by West, while Steve Wyland, who had three hits on the day, delivered an RBI single. UAlbany (3-6) opened a 9-2 lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth, as Zac Halloran and Nate Olson each hit their second home runs of the season. The Great Danes regained the lead with two in the seventh only to have the Keydets take it back with four in their half of the frame. The Great Danes, who led 31-25 at halftime, moved out to a double-figure lead early in the final period. Lucious Jordan made a three-point play when he was fouled on a jumper in the lane. Wilson, who made 7-of-8 from the field and grabbed five rebounds, then finished a fast-break layup on a feed from Jamar Wilson. UAlbany still led 43-32 with 15:00 remaining, but then took firm control with eight straight points. Levi Levine, a 6-foot-6 senior, had five of his nine points in that run. Jamar Wilson, who finished with eight points and four assists, capped that outburst with a three-point play as he was fouled on a drive to the basket. However, the Great Danes held the lead when Brent Wilson hit a layup and made a three pointer from the left corner. "We did a much better job defending this time," said head coach Will Brown, whose team dropped a pair of overtime decisions to New Hampshire in the regular season. We didn’t allow them to beat us from the three-point line. We stayed at home and were not anxious to help. Our team was focused because we didn’t want to be the next upset in this tournament." UAlbany’s Jason Siggers finished with nine points and five rebounds off the bench for the Great Danes, who held the Wildcats to 35.7 percent on 15-of-42 attempts. Tyrese Gibbs was the only other UNH player in double figures with 10 points. "We have been working on getting back to the RACC all season," explained Levine, whose team was playing in its first America East semifinal. "We know if we continue to play consistently that we can get a championship." "It was huge that everybody was able to contribute," said Brent Wilson, whose club reached the 20-win mark for the first time since the 1993-94 season. Everybody took it to heart they needed to be involved today. New Hampshire may have proved to some that we were vulnerable in this tournament and we needed to show that we were not." America East championship tickets for the general public will go on sale at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the UAlbany ticket office, located in the RACC.
