The technology transfer phase of this project is focused on improving the interaction and exchange of information of the interested parties effected by the remediation of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation area inactive hazardous waste sites. During the course of the NIEHS Superfund project conducted at the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation, a wealth of information has been collected on the distribution and concentrations of contaminants, and the effects on the human and wildlife populations. Considerable additional information has been complied by the three responsible parties involved with the remediation of on-site and adjacent areas. In addition, the NIEHS project has made significant advances in select remedial technologies including supercritical fluid extraction and treatment, biodegradation , photocatalytic degradation and electrochemical peroxidation.
The objectives of this phase of the project include improving citizen understanding of and participation in the remedial process; sharing information between NIEHS research staff and responsible parties, particularly on remedial technology developments; and expanding on the exchange of information between NIEHS staff and federal and state regulatory representatives.
