BASIC RESEARCH ON HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL WASTES

NIEHS Superfund Program

University at Albany

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Basic Research Program was initiated with the reauthorization of the Superfund under the Superfund Amendment Reauthorization Act (SARA) in 1986. SARA provided a role for NIEHS to conduct basic research including epidemiological, engineering and ecological studies in a broad range of areas related to understanding the potential health effects resulting from exposures to hazardous substances. The NIEHS Basic Research Program represents only 1.5% of the total Superfund Program budget. In 1994, NIEHS Superfund provided funding to 17 colleges and universities.
