Participating Agencies and Institutions

The following institutions and agencies participate in the training of preventive medicine residents in our program.

The School of Public Health at the University at Albany offers MPH, MS, DrPH, and PhD degrees. There are seven tracks for the MPH program:

  • Preventive Medicine
  • Epidemiology
  • Biostatistics
  • Health Administration
  • Social Behavior and Community Health
  • Environmental Health and Toxicology
  • Biomedical Science

Residents spend their first year completing coursework toward an MPH in any of the tracks. Most choose the Preventive Medicine track, an interdepartmental track with upper level courses in Epidemiology, Health Policy, Management, & Health Behavior.

They can also do practicum projects at the School, working with faculty in the Prevention Research Center, the Center for Public Health Preparedness, the Center for Health Workforce Studies, or the Continuing Education Program.

The New York State Department of Health is among the largest, most comprehensive state health departments in the nation, with programs addressing every major public health issue -- tobacco, HIV/AIDS, unintended pregnancy, heart disease, dementia, health care coverage, and many more. Practicum projects can be arranged in any part of the Department, and can involve designing and carrying out epidemiological investigations, developing or evaluating public health programs, creating educational materials, and many other activities. Albany County Health Department & Schenectady County Public Health Services
All preventive medicine residents in this program complete at least one rotation in a county health department to learn about public health practice at the community level. The Albany and Schenectady County departments are responsible for the assessment, monitoring, and surveillance of local health problems in the Capital District and for ensuring that quality preventive and medical treatment services are available. They provide public health education and conduct a variety of programs in maternal and child health, environmental health, communicable disease control, chronic disease prevention, and injury control. They also serve as a regulatory agency for public health protection, inspecting restaurants, summer camps, and other public facilities, and they respond to a wide variety of local health issues as they arise.

American Cancer Society - Eastern Division
Residents enrolled in our Cancer Prevention Track (and any other interested residents) are encouraged to learn about how private sector partners contribute to public health by doing a rotation at the American Cancer Society's Eastern Division headquarters in Albany. At ACS they can get involved in legislative advocacy, community program development, and professional education.

Research Institute of Bassett Healthcare
The Research Institute, located in Cooperstown, New York, is involved in a wide variety of innovative research studies and programs addressing issues relating to preventive medicine, with a special focus on rural health. There are opportunities for residents in several of the Institute's projects. Residents can participate in research drawing on the resources of the Institute's Rural Population Laboratory, including detailed health data about Otsego County's 44,400 residents, collected through a periodic Health Census. They can learn about local public health practice through the Otsego County Public Health Partnership, a collaborative effort of Bassett and the county government to meet the county's needs for public health services. The Otsego-Schoharie Healthy Heart Program, a community-based cardiovascular disease prevention program, and the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH), an occupational medicine program for agricultural workers, provide additional opportunities for practicum projects.

Eastern New York Occupational & Environmental Health Center
The ENYOEHC is one of eight regional occupational health centers established and funded by the NYSDOH. It serves a 21-county region, providing clinical occupational health and industrial hygiene services, as well as conducting research on occupational issues. Elective practicum rotations at the Center introduce residents to clinical occupational medicine and allow them to participate in investigations.
