A Social-Ecological Approach to Diabetes Prevention and Management: Assessing Multiple Levels of Influence
Principal Investigator: Mary Gallant, Ph.D.
The project takes an ecological approach to assess social and environmental factors that influence diabetes management in these two underserved communities in the Capital Region. This project aims to examine the perceived social and community resources and barriers for illness management, and how these perceptions of support and barriers relate to diabetes-management behaviors. This project also involves collecting data from family members of adults with diabetes in order to assess their knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about diabetes management, measure agreement between perceptions of support received from family and reports of support provided, and assess family members own diabetes-prevention behaviors. The project will result in an intervention plan for each community that targets social and community influences on diabetes management.
