Invitation to Nominate for the 2008 Excellence
in Leadership Award
The Excellence in Leadership Award is presented by the Northeast
Regional Public Health Leadership Institute (NEPHLI) to an individual,
program or organization for outstanding contributions in public
health leadership. The NEPHLI Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes
the significant contributions and accomplishments of public health
practitioners who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment
in service to the community.
Eligible candidates must reside or work
in the NEPHLI partner states:
Nominees may not include NEPHLI staff, members
of the Award Committee or Scholars in the current NEPHLI Class.
Nominations not selected in previous years may be resubmitted.
Nominated individuals, organizations
or programs shall demonstrate excellent leadership skills in
the performance of one or more of the Ten Essential Public Health
Services:
Monitor health status to identify
community health problems
Diagnose and investigate health problems and health hazards
in the community
Inform, educate and empower people about health issues
Mobilize community partnerships to identify and solve health
problems
Enforce laws and regulations
Develop policies and plans that support individual and community
health efforts
Link people to needed personal health services and assure
the provisions of health care when otherwise unavailable
Assure a competent public health and personal health care
workforce
Evaluate effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of personal
and population-based health services
Research for new insights and innovative solutions to health
problem
Nominated individuals, programs or organizations
shall also demonstrate each of the five fundamental practices of
exemplary leadership as expressed by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z.
Posner in The Leadership Challenge:

The award consists of a symbolic commendation;
travel expenses, lodging for the awardee and a guest to attend the
presentation ceremony and a reception in honor of the awardee. The
award will be given at the opening session of the annual Leadership
Institute on July 14, 2008.
Leadership contributions in the fields of
research, administration, education, technical service, and all
specialities of public health leadership practice receive equal
consideration. By this mechanism, the award becomes a true recognition
of the candidate for outstanding leadership in public health. State
and local departments of health, public health associations, public
health educational institutions, affiliated associations, the NEPHLI
Advisory Committee, Alumni and current Scholars are
encouraged to nominate an individual, program or organization for
consideration for the Excellence in Leadership Award.
The Award Committee includes two current
NEPHLI Scholars, one NEPHLI Alumni and three members of the NEPHLI
Advisory Committee. The Award Committee will review the nominations
and select the 2008 award winner in May.
All nominations for the award should be submitted on the prescribed
form (see hyperlink below for the Excellence in Leadership Nomination
Form). The deadline for nominations is May 21, 2008. Nominations
received after May 21, 2008 cannot be guaranteed consideration for
the 2008 award.
