Housing in Albany

New to the Albany area and trying to find a place to live? These tips are designed to help students who are new to the area find housing that is appropriate for them.

Considerations for an apartment search:
-Proximity to the bus line, particularly in the winter.
-Activity level and safety of a particular community
-Living in an area with other graduate students vs. undergraduate students.

Some tips for finding housing in the Albany area:
Many apartments will become available and signs will be posted in
the window of the building, so sometimes the best option is to identify a small section of the city and walk.
If one has a car then you can choose to live on the outskirts of the
city. The apartments tend to be less expensive.
Go to the place before you agree to check it out! Don't waste your time with appointments in areas where you would not feel comfortable living. Check out the areas first, then inquire.

The Albany Times-Union usually will list the options closest to downtown.
The University also has an off-campus housing web site, though it is sometimes more appropriate for undergraduate students.
If you are an incoming student and are not having success finding a place to live, contact us at the SPH and see if we can help you.
