HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER IN PUBLIC HEALTH?
“I began my career in public administration and worked at the Department of Health, Office of International Cooperation, in Taiwan for six years. Through this job, I had the opportunity to observe how health policies and management can directly affect people’s health and quality of life, how research findings shape the formulation of health policies and strategic planning. This exposure set the tone for my public health career.”
WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT PUBLIC HEALTH?
Through teaching and collaborative research, I have the opportunity to make a difference in health outcomes and long-term care services for the elderly.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO DO OUTSTANDING RESEARCH IN YOUR FIELD?
The aging process fascinates me. In responding to the demographic shift and epidemiological nature of the aging population, the results of my research can foster functional independence and autonomy, thus improving quality of life of older adults. I believe the ultimate goal of science and medical technology is to improve quality of life of the people it serves.
Education:
- Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of Maryland, School of Medicine,Dept. of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Division of Gerontology (1996).
- DrPH, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy & Management (1994).
- MPH, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (1989).
Other Professional Qualifications or Appointments:
- Nursing Home Administrator (Maryland State-License No. 1207), 1997-present
- Gerontologist ( Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health)
Courses Frequently Taught:
- HPM 500: Health Care Organization, Delivery, and Financing
- HPM 527: Introduction to Gerontology (Online)
- HPM 643: Long Term Care Administration
Research Interests:
My research interests center on health outcome evaluations related to the aging population, including:
- Assessing rehabilitation and functional recovery among the elderly following hip fracture
- Developing successful aging measurement
- Evaluating effectiveness of coordinated care
Current Research Focus:
My current research focuses on the feasibility study of “rehabilitation pathway to functional recovery following hip fracture among the elderly.”
