HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER IN PUBLIC HEALTH?

“I began my career in public health as an undergraduate student at the American University of Beirut. At the time, I had limited knowledge of the broad impact of public health on various aspects of our lives. My decision to pursue a graduate education in public health was the realization that what we do improves people's lives and future.”

WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT PUBLIC HEALTH?

“My passion for public health comes from the fact that it has a direct influence on communities and populations. From air and water quality to health care access and changing people's risky behavior, every area within public health shapes our lives.”

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO DO OUTSTANDING RESEARCH IN YOUR FIELD?

“I find studying the financing and quality of health care services to be a very exciting area in public health. In addition, I always ask myself: ‘Am I making a difference? Are students that I’m teaching and advising more knowledgeable and equipped to go out and have a positive impact in the health care field? Does my research contribute to our quest for the ideal health care system and is it relevant to people's lives and future?’”

Education:

  • B.S., Public Health, American University of Beirut, 1996
  • M.P.H., Health Services Administration, American University of Beirut, 1998
  • Ph.D., Health Management & Policy, University of Iowa, 2001

Research Interests:

Pay for performance (P4P), association between costs and quality of health care services, health care finance, financial performance of hospitals, financial evaluations of health care interventions, cost effectiveness/cost benefit analysis, innovations in managed care, prescription drug utilization and costs.

Current Research Focus:

Association between Hospital-Based Costs and Quality of Coronary Revascularization: A Potential Pay-For-Performance Approach

This project aims to examine the association between costs and outcomes for coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) and percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Furthermore, a potential pay for performance (P4P) approach is explored that identifies hospitals that are top performers in efficiency and quality (The project is funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)) .

A Comparative Approach to Examine the Association between Cost and Quality of Coronary Revascularization Procedures: The Use of Administrative vs. Clinical Data

Building on a previous study, this project explores the utility of using administrative data to risk-adjust costs and quality measures. The findings from this study will help validate the use of risk factors derived from administrative data sets for conditions/areas where clinical data sets are not available (The project is funded by the Commonwealth Fund).

Does Good Quality Cost More? Exploring the Association between Performance on HQA Pneumonia Measures and Hospital-based Costs

Many have questioned the financial impact of investing in enhancing quality. This study addresses this issue through examining whether better performance on HQA’s pneumonia measures is associated with higher inpatient costs of pneumonia discharges.

A Multi-Center Financial Evaluation of Regional Clinical Data Exchanges across New York State

A number of health care institutions in New York State have joined to form Regional Health Information Organization (RHIOs). This study evaluates the financial impact of implementing various clinical data exchange approaches (through information technology) across different settings (The project is funded by the Commonwealth Fund).
