Degrees Offered
Masters of Science (MS)
Masters of Public Health (MPH)
Doctorate of Public Health (DrPH)
Master's of Science
The Master of Science (MS) program offers a broad perspective on political, psychological, and institutional issues with particular emphasis on analytic and quantitative skills. A scientific focus distinguishes the MS degree from the broader scope of the MPH degree.
The MS program is designed to address the important public health challenges in today's world, including: how governments should respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, how hospital regulations affect costs and quality of care, strategies to improve health of poor children, techniques for promoting healthy lifestyles and strategies for providing universal health care.
Master's of Public Health
The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a professional degree designed to prepare graduates to tackle real public health problems. As future practitioners, they will be able to apply their breadth of understanding as well as some degree of expertise and experience in at least one specific area of public health.
The School's interdisciplinary MPH degree program allows students to apply cutting edge scientific and technical knowledge to preventing disease and promoting wellness through organized community efforts. The diversity and complexity of today's public health issues require practitioners who understand the political, ethical, economic, and scientific concerns involved in addressing today’s public health challenges. The School's unique focus on linking academic studies with a broad base of knowledge, skills and experience is necessary to meet these challenges. All students participate in at least two distinct public health internships. To download a copy of the M.P.H. booklet with information on admission requirements and program of study, click here.
Doctorate of Public Health
The Doctor of Public Health Degree builds on and significantly extends the School's pioneering M.P.H. program. The Dr.P.H. aims to prepare leaders within the public health profession who will address complex public health issues by combining sophisticated analytic and research skills with a broad-based understanding of the political, scientific, medical, statistical, ethical and economic factors that contribute to health problems. The Dr.P.H. is modeled on medical education, giving students both intensive instruction and offering them the opportunity to do four internships, or rotations, through a range of public health programs. The doctoral internship rotations accomplish for public health students what internship rotations are for students in medical school, providing direct, hands-on experience in several areas within the field of health. The culminating experience for Dr.P.H. students will be a doctoral project that demonstrates the student's capability to take charge of a major public health problem using the range of skills acquired. Through its strong relationship with the New York State Department of Health, the School has access to countless research programs in all aspects of public health.
Dr.P.H. students will face a rigorous set of requirements. The program requires 78 to 81 credits beyond the baccalaureate, including 30 credits in six core subject areas considered basic to public health. These core areas are behavioral sciences, biomedical sciences, environmental health, epidemiology, biostatistics, and health administration. An additional 18 credits of coursework will be completed in Health Policy, Management and Behavior. In addition to the two three-month internships, which amount to 12 credits, the student will complete a doctoral project and dissertation, based on an extended internship of at least nine full-time months in duration in a public health program.
