Department Overview
Welcome to Environmental Health
Laurence Kaminsky Ph.D, Chair
The Department of Environmental Health Sciences is
an academic department in the School of Public Health,
University at Albany. The department offers programs
leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, preparing outstanding
students for technical, teaching and research careers
in academia, public health agencies and industry.
The programs benefit from being based at the Wadsworth
Center, a modern, well-equipped comprehensive research
institution which serves as the public health laboratories
of the New York State Department of Health. This relationship
exposes the student to a range of real-world, scientifically
based environmental and public health problems and to
an organization with a tradition of high-quality basic
research. Our faculty has a unique diversity of research
interests and actively encourages cross-disciplinary
research problems.
The Department of Environmental Health Sciences offers
programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, preparing
students for teaching and research careers in academic,
public health agencies, and industry. The EHS Graduate
program provides the opportunity to obtain either a
M.S. or a Ph.D. degree. The program leading to the M.S.
degree is designed to be completed in two years. The
program leading to the Ph.D. degree typically requires
five years of full-time study.
The department offers three broad areas of specialization:
Environmental Chemistry, Toxicology, and Environmental
and Occupational Health. Graduate programs are individualized
and courses are selected in accordance with both the
track requirements and the background and interests
of the individual student.
