Welcome to Environmental Health Sciences
Patrick J. Parsons, PhD, Chair
Welcome to the Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS), a joint venture between the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) and the University at Albany School of Public Health (SPH), where laboratory scientists and population scientists collaborate together in addressing a broad range of environmental health issues.
EHS offers two doctoral degree programs leading to the PhD degree, a research-based program of study, and the DrPH degree, a professional-based degree. EHS also offers masters level study leading to either the MS (research) and MPH (public health practice) degrees.
PhD/MS degree students can choose to specialize in one of three EHS concentrations: Toxicology, Environmental Chemistry and Environmental and Occupational Health. Students in Toxicology and Environmental Chemistry have the unique opportunity to work with faculty in the state-of-the art laboratories of the Wadsworth Center, the research intensive arm of the NYS DOH, as well as University at Albany’s GE*NY*SIS Center for Cancer Genomics. Students specializing in Environmental and Occupational Health have the opportunity to work with faculty in the NYS DOH's Center for Environmental Health, as well as with faculty based on the UA East Campus.
DrPH/MPH students follow a broader curriculum with an EHS concentration that provides for internship opportunities including the NYS DOH's Wadsworth Center and Center for Environmental Health.
EHS Graduates go on to truly rewarding careers in government, academia and in industry.
So if you care about the environmental and public health, and you are ready to make a real difference, train alongside world class scientists and public health professionals, use state-of-the-art equipment, and have a competitive edge in the job market:
If you would like to schedule a tour of our facilities and campus, or if you have any questions, contact the EHS Department office, we are happy to assist you any way we can.
